Quote from: Guilt Trip on February 15, 2024, 07:20:43 PMWhere is Gio going after that brutal play by Domi.

Hopefully waivers or Robidas island 😆

Quote from: Highlander on January 21, 2024, 12:30:44 PMJust wondering how the last month would have been if Woll didn't get injured.  Here's hoping he is the real deal and comes back after the All Star break.

I dont think that the defensive deficiencies of this team would be cured with Woll between the pipes.

Someone please explain to me why Giordano still gets a regular shift in this league.

I have also been impressed with what Ive seen of Lajoie. He is definitely the most mobile fill in option we have seen on backend. Seems to move the puck with confidence.

Robertson is not a guy I would send out for 3 on 3.  Man to man coverage is not his strong suit.

Quote from: azzurri63 on October 16, 2023, 07:39:45 PMOur D sucks

Gio has to go, dont think that Benoit is the answer for #6 dman but come on there has to be better options on Marlies or toiling in minors somewhere.
Hawks have a decent blueprint for success, lots of speed up front and towering defencemen with long reaches that take away space and passing lanes.

Quote from: Bender on September 25, 2023, 08:41:08 PMThey played that 2 on 2 so badly. Some things never change.
Gio played that bad but whatever...pre season

That was my exact takeaway on the winner as well and I will continue to rag on Giordano until they finally realize that he is not a top 6 Dman anymore.

I do like how the roster is taking shape now.
Three guys I would like to shed from roster to create further room for upgrades would be Jarnkrok, Timmins and Giordano.  You should be able to fill those holes easily with better options.

QuoteHow about the others making 7+ million with no physical jam to their game? This is the team Dubas built and unfortunately doesn't look like it's going to change much.

I do agree but finding skilled guys making 7+ that consistently finish hits is more rare, that's why it is that much more important to round out rest of lineup (particularly bottom 6) with players of that nature. We will see what Treliving has up his sleeve, but right now team is still way to soft for playoff success.

Would have liked to see him back at about 1.75 million. Between himself and Jarnkrok, we now have two bottom 6 guys making 2+ with absolutely zero physical jam to their game.

Quote from: Nik on June 12, 2023, 09:58:14 AMYeah. The unfortunate reality of the situation that Dubas left is we need swings. I'd much rather have, like, the #40 and #75 than just 28. Cram the system with those high scoring CHL players I crave.

Yup. Especially since the caliber of prospect available at 40 isn't significantly different to those at 28. You're giving up some freedom of choice, but not a ton in terms of potential ceiling. For a team that needs to add as quantity as well as quality, unless they've identified a clear favourite, adding more picks feels like the smart play.

In theory, I also agree with this strategy though you want to make sure you arent passing on a Travis Konecny just so that you can load up with a Travis Dermott plus a Jeremy Bracco and Martins Dzeirkals 🤔.

QuoteAnd if this pisses off the players, which I'm betting it will because they all loved Vintage, this team is going to take a huge step back if said players aren't willing to sign extensions.

I dunno, this group of players never seems to get pissed off, well never played like they were at least. 😏

Quote from: Rob on May 14, 2023, 02:13:19 PMI don't think anyone is taking Tavares for two more years at $11m per unless the Leaf retains salary or give up more assets.  I don't really think Tavares is a problem but a move to the wing would probably do him good.

Tavares at 32 is still a point per game player.  He's the ultimate professional and someone you want around the team. He just scored a massive goal for this team, a goal that put them into the second round.  Something Matthews, Marner or Nylander couldn't do.

So pajamas or not, Tavares did nothing wrong to warrant having the captaincy taken away, or to be asked to waive his NMC.

It's possible that a lower budget team with plenty of cap space (Buffalo? Arizona?) would have mild interest in Tavares. After Leafs payout his bonus July 1 this year, they would only be on the hook to pay him just under 9 million total for 2 years worth of service, probably decent value if they can absorb the 11 million cap hit.

Now getting Tavares to waive his NTC to go to a low budget team that is probably not going to even make playoffs would be a tough sell.

Quote from: dekedastardly on May 12, 2023, 09:42:59 PMOverall this team is just too GD soft

Said it a thousand times but funny thing is some don't think so. But each year we are always back in the same position and questioning the teams toughness. That and lack of scoring again.

How can you possibly question their toughness in this series?  They went toe to toe.  They stuffed Tkachuk pretty much.  They had all kinds of big hits.  Toughness wasn't the problem.  Scoring, or lack thereof, absolutely.

When I say toughness I mean making it difficult hitting people getting in their face at the end of plays whatever. Teams do it against us and we just take it. I'm not knocking the effort tonight but the team is easy to play against because opponents know there's nothing coming back at them. As much as I hate guys like Gudas Bennett those are the types of players you need in the playoffs. I didn't see them getting hit. Bennett still running around hitting people and hard both of them for that matter. Bennett should have been targeted after taking out Knies. That's what I'm getting at.

That bugs me as well. There was zero push back on Bennett, Gudas and Tkachuk who knew they could get away with taking runs at our star players (and anyone else). Its never a good thing when you have only one forward (Accari) who poses any kind of physical threat.

Quote from: Nik on May 12, 2023, 09:45:39 PMNobody can say they didn't compete or show real heart here. Tough loss, tough series. Ran into hot goaltending.

We'll get 'em next year.

hmmm Leafs seem to always run into hot goaltending 🤔
