Lol!

That made my morning.

Any thoughts after seeing Dumba last night?  Is he good at defense? Is he a reasonable investment on the right with Rielly?
#3
Wondering if Dumba is any good defensively.  What does he do well?  Do we want to trade for him?

Could've had at least 2 A if Domi and Robertson buried those looks

Was going to wonder out loud whether Bertuzzi would ever score again...

Quote from: princedpw on February 11, 2024, 05:56:56 PMViolence against others is not ok, even when your feelings are hurt.  NHL players and coaches are horrendous role models in this respect.

My girlfriend said some mean things about me so I punched her in the face and broke her arm.  Her fault.  She shouldn't have said it.

This take is so confusing. Why are you conflating actual purposefully violent sports that consenting adults engage in vs. spousal abuse? All MMA fighters should be given life sentences in your world.

I probably shouldn't have used such an extreme example.  You are right - it is different than spousal abuse because the NHL has normalized fighting. (In my opinion, it is unethical for the NHL to have done so.)

Fighting and attempting to injure is not part of the game of hockey.  The incident is against the rules and happened after the game is over.  But the NHL promotes the idea that violence is a just response to having one's feelings hurt. It is too similar to the kind of thing that happens outside a bar at 1am.  Men defending their honor with fists.

It seems somewhat different than MMA where the "game" is fighting (as opposed to the game isn't fighting but you get made and attack someone.). Having said that, I don't at all like the notion that people enjoy watching others get beat up, but it's a little different.

Sell Bertuzzi at the deadline if you can get a good pick for him. And maybe other peripheral assets.  Then challenge the kids to win it with a nobody-believes-in-us rallying cry.  They haven't won much when they are favored.  Why not try the underdog mentality?  I'd rather go in as an underdog and maybe get surprised anyway.

Quote from: princedpw on January 27, 2024, 01:16:46 PMReally want some reporter to ask Tre why he signed Reaves to an unburiable 3-year contract when he was unplayable bad last year and heading for his late 30s.  What did he predict would happen?

Why?
All but 200K can be buried.

Yeah. It's a very buriable contract.

200K makes a difference. Every year we struggle to get the roster under the cap, flirt with 20 skaters to start the season and dump better players that we can't afford.

So why is a guy who everyone thinks can't play in the NHL and will definitely get worse each year of the contract signed for an unburiable number?

And no I don't care he got a lucky deflection last game!

No and no. He's not particularly good any more. We don't need assholes.  There's no evidence that assholes actually help you win. It is a myth.

Another answer is that if a team wins the cup, one will always find their play exciting regardless of style.  At worst, some 4th liner grunt who scored the 1 goal in the 1-0 nailbiter will be a hero.

Quote from: Chris on January 07, 2024, 02:30:53 PMThe whole "Cup vs entertainment" debate is quite interesting. I would trade all of Nylander/Matthews/Marner and be happy with the team playing the most boring trap style if it meant they would definitely win a Cup. I can't even explain why I feel that way, especially since I don't live in Toronto (and never have). I figure with the internet resources we have available, I can watch any team any day - I can find high flying entertainment almost any night of the week. McDavid et al one night, McKinnon another...the Devils have some exciting players now, Vancouver, etc. Give me a Cup.

It's a nice bonus that the Leafs are both a Cup contender and highly entertaining but I'd happily trade off some of that entertainment value for a better Cup chance.

The difficulty with this kind of hypothetical is that one can never guarantee a cup.  So the typical choice is whether one would prefer a high scoring team or a low scoring team, with no particular guarantee that either one is likely to go further in the playoffs.

Andrei Vasilevskiy: currently the most overrated player in the NHL.

Also: yikes at some of the */- stats on those top Tampa forwards. Looking at you Stamkos.

What's this? What's this?
There's color everywhere
What's this?
There's white things in the air
What's this?
I can't believe my eyes, I must be dreaming
Wake up, Jack, this isn't fair
What's this?

What's this? What's this?
There's something very wrong
What's this?
There's people singing songs
What's this?
The streets are lined with little creatures laughing
Everybody seems so happy
Have I possibly gone daffy? What is this?
What's this?

There's children throwing snowballs instead of throwing heads
They're busy building toys and absolutely no one's dead
There's frost on every window, oh, I can't believe my eyes
And in my bones I feel the warmth that's coming from inside
Oh look, what's this?
They're hanging mistletoe, they kiss?
Why that looks so unique?
Inspired
They're gathering around to hear a story roasting chestnuts on a fire
What's this?

What's this?
In here they've got a little tree, how queer
And who would ever think?
And why? They're covering it with tiny little things
They've got electric lights on strings and there's a smile on everyone
So, now correct me if I'm wrong
This looks like fun, this looks like fun
Oh, could it be I got my wish?
What's this?

Oh my, what now?
The children are asleep
But look, there's nothing underneath
No ghouls, no witches here to scream and scare them or ensnare them
Only little cozy things secure inside their dreamland
What's this?
The monsters are all missing and the nightmares can't be found
And in their place there seems to be good feeling all around
Instead of screams, I swear, I can hear music in the air
The smell of cakes and pies are absolutely everywhere
The sights, the sounds
They're everywhere and all around
I've never felt so good before
This empty place inside of me is filling up
I simply cannot get enough
I want it, oh, I want it, oh, I want it for my own
I've got to know, I've got to know
What is this place that I have found?
What is this!?
A LEAFS GAME?
