To me this is the acid test of whether they have truly turned a corner.  What was it, 2 years ago? when they could have closed out a series in Game 6 on home ice and couldn't get it done.  I would love to see them blitz the Habs from the get-go and never even give them a whiff of hope.

Expect the Habs to try to come out strong early. Leafs need to weather that storm and put a couple pucks behind Price.

No need to rush Foligno back if he's not 100%.  The lineup on Tuesday was dominant, leave it as is or if changes must be made throw Sandin back in.

Sandin back in for Dermott. Brooks stays in, which is a little surprising to me. I thought he had a pretty rough game on Tuesday.

We don't know how good of shape Nash is in so maybe that's why.

I'm wondering the same. Otherwise I would think Nash rotates in to keep fresh.

The comments from Habs fans suggest it might be consternation about continuing to scratch Romanov (i.e. Montreal's Sandin).

I don't understand what it is that he doesn't understand.

Gustafsson (acquired by Montreal at the deadline for a 7th rounder, played 5 regular season games for them, isn't very good) is getting into their playoff line-up before Alexander Romanov (21-year old who averaged 17+ minutes in 54 games for Montreal in the regular season). Habs fans/media are all pretty baffled he hasn't played a playoff game... and now possibly might not at all.

Also Kulak being the one to come out instead of Merrill, but that's more of a secondary thing.

Romanov is probably their best puck moving D man. I'm glad he's not playing. Bergevin is going to play "his" guys. He's the same guy who gave away Mete to make room for Merrill...head scratchers.

My wife just showed me a tik tok video that a Leaf fan made where someone keeps talking about how good the Leafs are, and the Leaf fan just keeps saying stfu.  It ends with the person saying "What, you don't believe the Leafs are good?" to which the fan replies "Clearly I don't".

That video probably sums up my state of mind pretty well.

No penalties to be called tonight it would appear.

Until at a random moment they call one against us.

The defense is dropping back really quick and giving up the blue line.  It has let Montreal have a lot of chances to get the puck back in the Leafs zone because they are avoiding pinching
I was just thinking they need better Gap control. Sandin hasn't looked great so far.

If they can shave it to 3-2 then the 3rd could be pretty wild.

Marner interfered with letting Montreal get a 5 on 3 for a short bit

According to Simpson he wasn't interfered with, he was "trying to draw a penalty".  ::)

Leafs having trouble controlling the puck, making easy turnovers, not hustling for every puck nearly as much as the Habs are. They are getting completely outworked and outplayed. Willy has been the only bright light for the Leafs.

Maybe he kind of dominated in Game 2.  Otherwise, lots of good play but not that extra level.

They look like they just don't have it tonight.

I think I'd just load up L1 with 88 and double-shift them a few times in the 3rd.  Either you come back and tie it or lose 5-1.

Win or lose, this is encouraging.  They aren't even close to their A game and now are one shot away from closing this out.

OT is always nerve-wracking but literally all the pressure is in the Habs now.  Let's see what happens.

I know we are all aboard the Nylander train right now but his play has just gone to another level.  Last year he couldn't drive a second line in Game 5.  Tonight he is double shifting at times playing up the middle, on the wing.  He's just everywhere on the ice

After two terrible periods that third was encouraging. Didn't play that well but somewhat took control again. A bit more puck luck and it would be Uber already.

You want to know why it sucks to be a Leaf fan...because of crap like this.  This team is always on the receiving end of these things.  The Habs have done this before.  Against Boston, that series where Kovalev ran into his own player and hurt his hand.  They came back from 3-1 and won that series.  This doesn't happen for the Leafs.  Their the team that blows the 3-1 series lead or the 4-1 lead with 10 minutes left in 7 games.  The missed high stick call in game 6 in overtime.

At what point does this team succeed?  They've done everything by the book, and they can't beat a team that they had 11 more wins than.

If the score had been the other way around, you know the Leafs would have still lost rather than being the ones that scored in overtime.  This team has not won a playoff round since before my kids were born.  I have a kid that is learning how to drive now.  I just don't get how that much bad luck can fall on one team for so long.  Why can't this team be a Chicago, or be a Pittsburgh, or hell, just be a Washington one year.  Just boggles my mind.

Sorry, I'm just playing the script in my head.  "Scrappy Habs playing in front of fans for the first time in a year come back against Leafs and force game 7".  Then it's "The totally calm and collected Price delivers game 7 gem to bounce the Leafs".  The Leafs haven't flipped the script and in my mind they had to win tonight, because now we are on the "here we go again" train.

The Leafs beat themselves with dumb turnovers tonight. It's a very Leaf-y thing but also something that hasn't happened much in more recent history. I'm still confident we'll close this out on Saturday.

Now if this goes to game 7 I'm not ashamed to admit I'll be pretty nervous.

I mean on the flipside would it be fair to the Habs if they got punished by not being allowed to have fans just because Ontario's COVID situation is worse than Quebec's?

Some post-game thoughts...

Sandin, if he isn't going to play on PP1, why have him in there instead of Dermott?

Matthews didn't have his best game tonight, hopefully he picks it up next game.

Marner...seems to be over-thinking it, causing him to take too long and run out of time on many chances.

Galchenyuk, man...I thought he played well overall but that brain fart in OT is going to linger. Can't be doing that. Thought the pinch by Bogo was also ill-advised at that point.

I resemble this excellent post.

Which, while we are on the subject how is it even remotely fair that the Habs get fans for game 6?

I mean on the flipside would it be fair to the Habs if they got punished by not being allowed to have fans just because Ontario's COVID situation is worse than Quebec's?

I don't think that should come into play. NHL should flat out state that no fans allowed at any games between 2 teams. I don't care in a sense that it's only 2500 people but should be the same as it was last year. Once it seems like the 3rd wave is gone then let people in the stands in whatever city.

I don't blame Bogo so much. You pinch yes but all Gally had to do was look around, hold onto it or better yet dump it back into the Habs end. That was all his fault.

Oh for sure. But I get enough stress at work worrying about what ifs, there's no reason to let this seep into my Leafs watching until Game 7.

Positive take: The Leafs looked sluggish and out of sync (I honestly wondered during the game whether Matthews might be under the weather ... he just didn't have any snap all night) and they played by far their worst game of the series — and they still managed to put three by Price and get the thing to OT from being down 3-0.  They never quit.  Anything better than tonight's performance should get it done.

Negative take: they don't have the killer instinct — still.  If they manage to blow this series I have no idea what else can be done to get them over the hump.  I think Dubas gave them all the right pieces.  If they can't win a series after being up 3-1 against the 16th best team in the playoffs then ... I just don't know.

I believe that is why they brought in veterans who've gone through this before (Nash, Thornton, Foligno, Simmonds) ... players who can tell the team they can get through this mini-adversity. Hopefully if there are any doubts, those players can help nip it in the bud.

That I'm sure is what Dubas was thinking.  Bogosian too, although he picked a bad time to make his only real bad play of the series.

Fortunately... this was Game 5 with a 3-1 lead.. not Game 7.
The Leaf players who came out to get interviewed were rather ticked off. Hopefully as you said this game is motivation enough for Game 6.

I do feel bad for Galchenyuk. He helped set up the tying goal with his shot and that line was going pretty good again. I can understand if Sandin gets sat for Dermott. I hope they don't sit Gally for that 1 mistake  - tho costly.

The last goal is all on Galchenyuk. But it happens.
The pinch by Bogosian is a set play. The Leafs run it all the time. Dump it around, dman, comes down, F3 covers. What F3 shouldn't do is fire it across the blueline to a dman on the other side of the ice.

The Leafs weren't great tonight but fought back. Saturday will be fun. I wonder if Montreal will burn the city if they lose Saturday night?

Obviously it was a slow start, which was exacerbated by two absolute fluke goals, so coming back and tying the game and pretty much dismantling the Habs for the last half (sans OT) was good to see, at least. Price made a number of point-blank saves and stymied numerous odd-man chances. Frustrating, and also frustrating not to finish Montreal off, but a fully healthy Canadiens squad isn't a terrible team.

For Game 6 I would like to see the Leafs energized and dominant in period 1. They've been pretty slow to get going this series and they shouldn't let Montreal gain momentum at home. I'd also like to see Thornton scratched but that's probably not going to happen, neither is taking him off the PP (or at least PP1!), which is a total head-scratcher to me. Marner and Matthews need to get going; the latter has been playing well and getting chances but the former is really scuffling offensively and is constantly thwarting prime chances and PP cycling (though his defensive play/PK has been excellent).

Leafs HAVE to finish this is six. They have to, don't they???

The loss on an avoidable mistake sucked. Nothing wrong with the pinch by Bogo, good for Galchenyuk supporting the play, but much less good making a blind bump to the middle (even though it is a semi-set play too). A quick shoulder check on retrieval would've shown there was a lower risk option of chipping it deep again to start up the cycle. That said, left shot at the right wall for a player with limited agility is going to have a hard time either way to make something click without a lot of luck.

Clawing back to tie the game in the third was good to see (hello Muzzin with the Nylander group).

Seeing the fanbase echoing my talking points from last year (more Nylander/PP1 Willy, pls stop trying to do too much Marner) is validating but also sad that the issue has only become exacerbated under the playoff microscope and is somewhat unfairly maligning Marner's many contributions.

I'm better today, although I think I bet my wife all the money in our savings account last night that bad things were going to happen in my immediate reaction to the loss.  That may be a future problem that I have to deal with.

The bolded part is what I take issue with.  Most people didn't give the Habs a snowballs chance in hell of winning this series, so they weren't saying what you are saying there Andy.  If the Canadiens pull it off and come back from 3-1, which is really hard for a team to do when they are considered good, what does that say about the Leafs?  Where do they go from there?

I agree. Campbell has played very well but has let in some very "savable" goals. I think 4 of the 8 have been weak. The 2nd and 3rd goals last night can't go in even though the Leafs broke down. The good thing though is that they haven't needed him to bail them out much unlike Price has had to.

Funny thing is Thornton has been on the ice for 2 of the 3 PP goals, scored 1 of them. My issue isn't having Thornton on PP1, it's having him and Hyman there. One of them needs to go and Willy needs to be there. I like Hyman and all but he's not playing well and is killing the Matthews line.

Sure, but there are very few truly terrible teams in the NHL. The Habs - even at full strength - are not a good team. In the standard divisional alignment, they're almost certainly not a playoff team. Probably not even that close to being one, quite frankly.

I tend to agree, 2nd and 3rd goals should not have gone in, also here's an interesting take on the 2 on 0, should Campbell have knocked the net off? Take the penalty shot as now you're ready for it , much better odds of making the save...hmm.

They actually made a rule about that in 2019, after David Leggio did it a couple of times in the minors.  If you knock the net off intentionally on a breakaway or 2-on-0, it's an automatic goal.

When/if Foligno comes back, I'd throw him back on the ice with Marner and Matthews. I'd leave Nylander on his own with Kerfoot and Galcenyuk. I'd bump Hyman down to the third line(where he's at his best).

Quote from: Andy on May 28, 2021, 08:41:12 AMFrustrating, and also frustrating not to finish Montreal off, but a fully healthy Canadiens squad isn't a terrible team.

Sure, but there are very few truly terrible teams in the NHL. The Habs - even at full strength - are not a good team. In the standard divisional alignment, they're almost certainly not a playoff team. Probably not even that close to being one, quite frankly.

They're probably 12th.

This year Montreal (5 on 5) had a 54.4 CF%, 65.1 xGF, 52.2 XGA and a 58.7 SCF%. Their analytic stats are well above league average. High danger shots for, against, etc; all are very good. They are not a 12th place Conference team. Combine very average goaltending (.901 Price save %) with an extended absence to Gallagher and you get what looks like average to below average overall stats. A healthy Canadiens team with playoff Carey Price is not exactly a pushover.

There's truth to both sides of this argument. At the end of the day Montreal finished the season with a .527 points percentage, that translates to 86 points over an 82 game season. That's well, well below the usual cut off point for the playoffs and in a regular divisional format they definitely finish behind at least Tampa, Toronto, Florida, Boston, Pittsburgh, Washington, Carolina, and New York. It's pretty much undeniable that they only made the playoffs this year because of how the divisions were formatted.

But yes on the flip side their record was probably worse than their actual fully healthy (Price, Weber, Gallagher)/fully motivated (Price) line-up suggests.

I love how deliberate Tavares' moves are. If you could duplicate that dedication to your entire team.....look out.

Montreal is one of the weird cases in terms of analytics. Their numbers are significantly boosted by quantity over quality (they had the 4th most shot attempts in all situations, 3rd most 5-on-5), which is part of the reason why their share of high danger is much more average (51.9% 5-on-5, 49.8% in all situations), as was their xGF% in all situations (49.9% - just a tick higher than their actual goal share of 48.9%). They also don't have much by way of finishing talent, which led to their 7.5% 5-on-5 shooting percentage.

Also, you have to consider the talent of the teams they were playing against. The Leafs were clearly the best in the North, but I wouldn't say that's true of the Atlantic, where they'd be in a group that includes Tampa, Florida, and Boston - not to mention having to play the rest of the league, including multiple games against Carolina, NYI, Pittsburgh, Washington, etc. This past season is just not a very good barometer overall.

Additionally, when you look at the previous 3 seasons, Price's performance this season seems less like an aberration and much closer to the level of performance that should be expected from him at this point.

I'd be down for this but my gut tells me Keefe won't break that top line up. Just with the amount of minutes that top line plays he's going to want Hyman getting those instead of Foligno. I agree with keeping that 2nd line together though, Kerfoot has played much better in the 2C spot than I would have figured he would. So that would leave Foligno with Engvall and Mikheyev which seems like a good/similar alternative to your suggestion.

I agree that the regular-season numbers are not stellar, but when you look at the playoff numbers from the last 4 times he has been in the playoffs,  I think it shows that he can elevate:

Season            Team  GP    GS    W     L       T     OT     SA   GA    GAA    S     SV% SO      MIN

All good points, and, as Busta mentioned, they do lack the high-end talent/skill to be able to finish off some of their better chances. I'm not trying to suggest they are a great team or that Toronto shouldn't 100% win this series; I just think that expecting a sweep or simple series win with no push-back or adversity is asking a little too much. It's a decent-pretty good team that is now getting playoff Carey Price level of goaltending. Toronto needs to go for the jugular and not take anything, or period, lightly.

Small sample size, though. He can elevate his game for short stretches, but I don't see him being that guy for a full season anymore, and that will be another reason the Habs will struggle to compete for a playoff spot next season. They're lacking in high-end skill, their top D are aging - especially Weber - and Price has been below average 3 of the last 4 seasons (and Jake Allen struggled as a starter in St Louis - he's a very good backup, but that might be his ceiling). None of that adds up to being anything more an a also-ran. I don't think finishing around 12th in the conference next season is out of the question. Quite frankly, unless some significant talent is added this summer, I don't see how they'll finish higher than 10th.
