Awesome

Let's see if this works...

A couple of reasons I'd spitball to not have Nylander signed right now (even though I'd much prefer it):
- Gives the staff a chance to see what they have in the next wave of young players
- While the Leafs are currently in a bit of a slump (both for lack of trying and not), the Atlantic has enough garbage in it that the Leafs will make the playoffs and it's really just a matter of positioning; the only Atlantic team we play in November is Boston (twice)
- The more days Nylander is not signed, the lower his future cap hits become, which is when our actual cap crunch occurs, and it's only for that one season (2019-2020) which may or may not coincide with a CBA re-negotiation/lockout anyway and is also projected to see a bump in the cap to 81-84M.
- Not blinking here is Dubas giving a shot across the bow to Matthews' and Marner's respective agents, as well as other executives around the league who are cagily taking their measure of the new kid

TREVOR MOORE

The Leafs should absolutely be calling him up to play ahead of Ennis right now. They have an open spot on the roster with Matthews out, I don't know why they wouldn't give Moore a shot.

A couple of reasons I'd spitball to not have Moore up right now (even though I'd much prefer it):
- No yo-yo youth (of which Moore is, nominally). Similar to Johnsson last year and Kapanen before him, they probably want to see him dominate the level for a long stretch playing big minutes and building confidence; he's shooting nearly 25% right now, which can't possibly be a real number unless he's only ever going to be shooting from the slot off Royal Road passes or tips from the point.
- How much more of a boost overall does Moore have over Ennis in the 6-10 minutes of TOI per game? Ennis is not detrimental, just forgettable and the line is apparently designed to make sure nothing happens. I'd want Moore to be positioned to generate, but I don't think they'd slot him in over Marleau or Hyman just yet (if ever).
- Marlies are struggling a bit to win, and the front office values winning throughout the system, so I think it's an easy tradeoff here
- The coaching staff is babying a handful of freshly graduated prospects in Kapanen, Johnsson, Dermott, Ozhiganov, Holl, Gauthier, and sort of Leivo. They've shown a willingness to bend over almost backwards to shelter the kids heavily and adding more bodies to shelter is not what they want to focus on. Kapanen's already been pushed higher than they want due to the injury and impasse but they clearly want him on the PK training program
- Ennis is a free-agent signing looking to rehab his reputation and I think the Leafs are amenable to giving him as much of a chance to do so as an asset to trade later or actually keep for the season if he plays up to the level he can (see Matt Martin).
The Leafs paid no attention to Herminator and have brought MOORE up to the team...Dubas pay attention to Herman

Haha I wanted Moore in the opening night lineup, but I didn’t want him riding the bench like a Leivo.

They might send him back down after the road trip (as it is brief) to keep building cap space.

BTW

2 goals in 2 games played in Rasmus Sandin's AHL career thus far. It's going to be really fun when Liljegren and Sandin really get going.

Trevor Moore is back with the Marlies after catching a few Leaf games from the pressbox. I'm pretty sure he's not complaining about the 1000% pay bump during that brief period of time.

Pre-cursor to Nylander?  Like they move a body out to get ready for the Nylander announcement?  (yes, I'm hopeful)

They're off today and tomorrow and play at home on Friday. Probably more of a cap-saving thing. He (or someone else the Leafs want to pay to sit in the press box) will probably get called back up on Friday or Saturday.

Some light reading on Sandin and Liljegren's progress thus far. They're both a bit raw -- Sandin is more polished defensively, Liljegren has more tools for offense -- and will need to develop longer in the AHL (they're not even 20 yet). What they both have shown are the style of play that the Leafs really want their defense to play like: cycle stopping, quick ups to forwards (Liljegren has one of the best stretch passes in the org.), joining the rush as the extra attacker.

Guys, I don't think the Marlies are gonna retain their Calder Cup

They're getting the worst goaltending in the entire league (0.860 save percentage), but from all reports the rest of the team is playing very well. I imagine the Leafs are still waiting to see what happens with McBackup and Pickard, but if neither of them become available they'll make some sort of move to get a real goalie for the Marlies.
