Non-Hockey Chatter / Re: Coronavirus

Indoor ball hockey league is back.  Beauty.  You have to show proof of vaccination to enter the building and play.  Sure.  So why is it, that being the case, we are not allowed to use the dressing rooms to change?!  Instead we have to either get ready outside (okay on a balmy October night, not so much when December rolls around) or in a corner at the arena for everyone to see.  We are all shoulder to shoulder on the bench, breathing on each other, amongst another group of players (the other team).  So what's the issue?  If we can't do that now -- when everyone is confirmed to be vaccinated -- then when are we ever going to get that back?

Yet on the flip side, banquet halls don't require proof of vaccination, so it was no issues for my in-laws to be at a wedding reception last night with a hundred people, whether vaccinated or not.

None of this makes sense to me, and hasn't for a long while.

We can complain about the bullpen all we want, and it's a valid point, but it sure feels like there's been just a ton of games this year where the Jays needed a win and they managed, like, 5 hits all game.

Yeah. This loaded lineup has gone cold at the worst possible time.

I wasn't "blaming" the division or anything, if it came across that way.

Just saying it's frustrating that you're stuck in a division with 3 other teams who have over the last couple of decades, been really good at times, and often it feels like at least 2 of the others are good together ;D

So even when the Jays outperform expectations (which I think they probably are this year) they still might not make a post season.

As for changes that I do think might work, I would expand the post season similar to what they had last season so that more than 4 teams from each League get in. Maybe expand the wild cards from 2 to 4 or something like that. Have a 1 game series 1v4 and 2v3 then a 3 game series between the winners then the usual post season after that.

It feels a shame to me that only 2 of Boston, Toronto, the Yankees, Seattle and even Oakland are going to get into the post season when they could all win 90+ games.

It's a bit more clear cut in the NL, to be fair.

Yeah, I hear you.

The division argument is just something heard so often for years now that I don't even know what is to be expected anymore.  We have an ownership group that is flush with cash to compete with the two behemoths in the division.  We see the other rival defying all logic churning over talent year over year and winning divisions on a budget even you and I could afford.  If not us, some other team (ie. Twins or Tigers) would be crying foul.

It's crazy/frustrating that the Jays are such a decent team but stuck in this horrible division where they could be just the 4th best in it, but good enough to win a couple of other divisions. (allowing that their record would be better cos they'd be playing some weaker teams more often).

But in saying that I doubt anyone expected they'd even still be in the running this year with 6 games left.

If they can sneak into the playoffs they're the kind of team who could do some damage too.

What’s the solution for being in the division? Requesting a re-alignment? Under what bases?

I’m viewing this differently — I think this is a no-brainer for Montreal to not match.

Pay him $6.1 million, lose out on a 1st rounder, and then have to overpay him again or risk losing him for free? Let him walk and allow Carolina to overpay him by nearly double what he is worth. Then take that money and picks and use it as currency elsewhere.

Unless the Habs think he is set to seriously break out. But I don’t think him being a recent 3rd overall pick (a reach as it was) should have any bearing on the decision (although it certainly will).
Their center "depth" is already suspect as it is. Without KK their own first rounder will be higher than Carolina's (it probably would have been already anyway). This team lost Danault already they're in big trouble if they go into the season with Suzuki and friends as their centre options.

I get this.  Just that paying a guy $6.1 million when he likely would have signed for $2.5 to $3.5 million seems excessive.  Of course, as I had mentioned, unless they think he is set to take the next step in becoming a 2nd line, 60 to 70-point centre this year.  If not, I'm sure they could cobble some pieces together to fill the centre void with that money saved they aren't paying.

I’ll also add that I’m happy to see GMs finally using offer sheets to try and obtain a player. The unwritten rule amongst GMs for years of not signing a player to them was pure b.s. They are another means to make your team better, so why not use them. The whole premise is to try and put the squeeze on the affected team.

The business is cutthroat as it is, yet you’re not to use it so it doesn’t enact revenge? Big whoop. Especially if such revenge is a stupid offer sheet like this.

I hope Montreal calls Carolina’s bluff and say thanks for the picks and enjoy Kotkaniemi at that price. Stupid offer sheet in my opinion considering it’s only for one year, but really not surprising from what was likely precipitated from an idiot owner.

I think the Leafs need to re-sign Rielly and it’d be a huge mistake if they move on from him (especially if he just walks for free).

The D is pretty average as it is right now. I don’t even want to think about it if removing Rielly.

Easily one of the more infuriating follows

Good grief. Just scrolled through a few. Forget how egregious some of them were. The fact the umps easily tossed a few players questioning the calls is infuriating to see. Not only do they botch up the call, they can’t be questioned nor held accountable, and just toss them out.

Liking the Kase and Ritchie signings for depth and the risk/reward that could come with it.

Not convinced though that all these signings will mitigate the loss of Hyman.

Do I need to keep repeating myself re: Holl?

Maybe I'm just biased because I despised Ceci even when he was with the Sens.  I hated him here even more.  That contract is absolutely ridiculous.

I guess Edmonton loves their mediocre RHD after Larsson moved on to the Kraken.
