Leafs part ways with Berube

The will they won't they was so bizarre. You could tell Matthews and most of the team was done with this. Bringing him back with the metrics they had last season would be nuts. I also think doing it in season for a GM's job preservation was a completely ridiculous take. You could make the case that not firing him would be malpractice.

I mean we are dealing with extremely low hanging fruit but so far the Chayka era involves us winning the draft lottery (I give Sundin's aura credit for Winnipeg's ball falling out of the tube) and this.

The most optimism this team has had in more than a year

Only possible way he stayed would have been if Pelley made the call, either because he liked him too much or for monetary reasons. So this feels like a good initial sign that he won't be too involved. Hopefully it stays like that.

There was no way that Chayka (and Sundin) were going to bring him back. Dawn of a new era for the Leafs. Hopefully some rejuvenated optimism for the franchise after frittering away the last decade with the Matthews/Marner/Nylander era.

According to Pelley, the Leafs GM had to get MLSE board approval to fire Berrube.
I found Berube likeable so I'm sorry on that level. He does have 2 more years on his contract.
It seemed pretty clear that it had to be done.
I'm sure they got some credible input from him on what went wrong which should help them correct it.
Hopefully, they can acquire a good replacement.
I think they're likely a better team already because of this.

Terry sure had this one done quickly.
Common practice in Journalism to have obituaries queued up

An average coach probably puts this team back into the playoffs without much difficulty even with the roster flaws (because the players will actually try now), and the gate revenue from the first home game covers the remainder of Berube's contract easily. It's a no brainer on all levels of decision making and I'm glad the team actually took the feedback without letting weird ownership preferences muddy the water.

That said, I like Berube's general idea for implementing playoff readiness and a playstyle effective in tighter checking environments; sadly he, like the person who hired him, could not actually translate those ideas into actionable process and execution.

Those twitter folks that changed their profile pictures to petition Berube's dismissal are going to be even more insufferable now

Sorry for anyone to lose their job on a personal level.

Delighted from a personal point of view cos it might make the Leafs watchable again.

We do have something to be thankful for: without Berube, we probably wouldn't have the first overall pick - or any pick in the first round.

Edmonton, please hire former cup winner Craig Berube.

Connor McDavid, please have another Cactus Club chat with fellow Moldaver client and McDonald’s spokesperson Auston Matthews.

Thank goodness....interesting that some insiders were pretty sure in reporting Leafs were prepared to start the season with Berube. Adds more fuel to the incessant media coverage crap that occurs in Toronto.

I literally don't believe any of it. I can handle reporting on logical conclusions, but reporting he's coming back was bonkers.

I hear you - my brother last night (who is a casual leafs fan at best) asks me 'what's this with Matthews saying he wants to leave?' and I said Matthews hasn't actually said anything, this is all based on 1 tweet. And he was saying that's all he's hearing. Toronto media really is annoying at times.

And while I'm on that semi rant - Kypreos was complaining the other day that knies was at raptors game when he should have been watching hockey. I can't even wrap my head around whatever point he was trying to make. I appreciate that Bourne or McKee (I can't remember which one) told him that was an absolute garbage take. He's trying really hard to be the new mccowan. We don't need a new mccowan.
