-Toronto's line-up looked a little different at practice on Tuesday as Laughton, Lorentz, and Maccelli all skated on regular lines while Cowan, Blais, and Jarnkrok skated as the extras
-If Laughton and Lorentz do both come off the IR on Wednesday a corresponding roster move will have to happen as the team will be one man over the roster limit
-One other move at practice that will surely attract attention was OEL taking over the PP1 spot from Rielly

We have been denied a Tanev-Bowl, but we should be able to get a Maccelli revenge goal. Utah in the meantime has no access to former Leaf auto-goals (Carcone was a Marlie).
 
No one on waivers with Lorentz and Laughton re-activating (potentially) means it's a waiver-exempt body going down (Cowan) or some kind of trade for a non-roster asset.

Cowan hasn't been bad necessarily and 1G 3A in 10 GP isn't bad production for a rookie but I just see a guy who Berube doesn't trust. When the team is trailing he gets nailed to the bench and he shows himself as a smaller developing player. I just really think he should be playing 15-18 minutes in the AHL and that would be more valuable at this point than 10 minutes in the NHL where he sits for the majority of the 3rd period. Unless someone is going on LTIR the Leafs need to stop wasting assets.
 
I think Cowan is good enough right now to be worthy of a regular lineup spot. However...(1) it's not clear if he can maintain that level over a long season (good chance he'll need to go the Marlies at some point), and (2) the Leafs have a lot of other forwards who, while not as talented as Cowan, supposedly are better suited for the style Berube wants to play.

My choice would be to send him to the Marlies where he can play big minutes every night, in all situations. Then Berube can sort out the remaining forwards over time without worrying about Cowan's development. Cowan can always come back to the Leafs later in the season if it makes sense.
 
If sending Cowan down was the plan, why would they burn the 10 games and 1 year of ELC ?
He has yet to earn Berube's trust, but we saw him on last minute of a game when the Leafs were trying to tie.

anyway, hope they show up, they usually don't against the Coyotes/hockey Club/Mammoth Go Leafs Go!!!

The 10 game burning a contract thing only applies to 18/19-year olds who get sent back down to the junior leagues. Since he's 20 years old Cowan's first year of his ELC begins this season regardless of where he plays.
 
Spending the first year on a choppy up and down season, if it doesn't hamper development, suppresses their ELC production totals, which should lead to a Kadri/Nylandery type of second contract, vs a previous London Knight who had 3 full seasons when the team was flying.

For what it's worth, Berube likes having a kid or two on the roster, and Cowan is really effective at augmenting the Leafs' playstyle when he is moving confidently. He also uses watching games from above as a development tool.

I can't hope but think that we would have more "Cowens" in the lineup if we hadn't tried to win the Cup as soon as Matthews was drafted. I know a few or many of you thought that trading 1st rounders or not getting thing back for the Bozaks, and JVRs, etc was a mistake.

this was absolutely a problem.

Trading for Andersen in net, the first to get rid of Marleau, not trading the Bozak's and JVRs of the world. They coupled with striking out on mid round picks. The Leafs really haven't had a draft where they "stole" an elite player with a late pick

Just for the record though, all the things you mentioned were Lamoriello, who I don’t think was much better than JFJ.
 
Only the 49th player in league history to score 500. I really thought it would be more than that. I guess it goes to show how hard it is to score in the NHL.
