Woll and Benoit traded to Philly

How was he thrown under the bus?

I wasn't hearing any sustained criticism of Woll outside of his fragility. His athleticism in net (w/o swimming) + his mental demeanor, able to shrug off adversity. He was tabbed to be our 1A guy in net. I thought there'd be more anger at this underwhelming deal.

Also, just a word about Benoit. He had to go but I give him credit for putting together a good campaign season before last. I hope he sticks in Philly.

I am ok with Woll going, we knew that either him or Stolarz were on the move, they would not risk to lose Hildeby for free.

Anyway, just hopping that the scout that said: keep Rask, trade Pogge is:
a) Still in the Leafs Organization
b) Select Wool instead of Stolarz/Hildeby.

There's barely overwhelming favour for this deal in this thread. Most have said they expected more for woll. Many said they would have preferred to trade Stolarz. And any criticism of will, in this thread, I think has been fair.

I still can't believe how good he was as a pairing with McCabe then. Shame he couldn't maintain anywhere near that level of play.

herman, I distinctly remember (well, maybe just remember-ish) your comments in that GDT too. I think you predicted where Matthews would beat him, and he did.

It was this game back in 2024. He looked very vulnerable low glove and Matthews missed on a hat trick chance because he didn’t shoot where I said he should.

And then he did.

It's underwhelming but it'll only be angering if they're wrong. I do think there's an equally likely chance he can only play 30 games a year at most and is plagued by injuries throughout his career. How much is that worth? 🤷🏻

Emil Andrae is likely the key piece

Converting offensively pointless and defensively funny Simon Benoit for a zippy little LD (from the Swedish leagues, where Sundin and some of our best scouts will be quite familiar), and punting Woll to a team desperate for goaltending for a pick and project that can be stuffed in the minors.

I will be impressed if it gradually becomes clear that Chayka was hired to put a corporate speak smokescreen up while Sundin shadow-GMs us to a team of obscure Swedes.

Happy to see Benoit moved for someone who can move a puck. Woulda hoped for a bit more for Woll, but I think I tend to remember goalies’ heaters more than the body of work. Still, might’ve saved this move until after we’re past training camp injuries

No. That was Shawn Simpson. He tragically took his own life last year.

Actually, sorry, I may have that reversed. Simpson may have been the one that was saying keep Pogge and trade Rask. I know he was involved in it in some way because he was on the radio here and he used to bring it up.

Exactly! I almost posted "low glove" too — that's how I remembered it — but then I didn't because I didn't trust my memory ... which is smart of me.

Ah, the good old days of Matthews hat tricks. May the 72 > 34 connection bring them back again.

His durability looked fine once he finally got back this year from his hiatus. I won't judge his current level of play from that, mind you.

I don't think this is Pogge The Sequel but I would have moved Stolarz if at all possible.

It's not a Pogge situation at all. We have a pretty good idea who these goalies are in their careers at this point.

Hate losing Woll but fact is Stolarz is worth nothing and there's no way the Leafs can carry 3 goalies. Woll had the most value. Is what it is so wish him and Benny well. Hope the new guys work out. I think Ersson is Marlies bound, if the Leafs even qualify him. He's not a good goalie and certainly not going to be on the roster over Hildeby

Why couldn't they carry 3 goalies? Other teams have done it and the Leafs have cap room.
