Woll and Benoit traded to Philly

Small sample size but Ersson did step up for the Flyers post-Olympic break this season to help get them into the playoffs with a 6-1 record and .912 Sv%/1.99 GAA. Just don't look up what his stats were before that.

He also wasn't great for a good chunk of the season - not that he got any help from the team in front of him. Like I said earlier, I don't think he's ever going to the the guy. He's a solid part of a tandem, but, overall, his numbers are largely pretty average.

I still would have kept him over Stolarz, all else being equal, because of his age and such. But, the Leafs needed to make a move in net eventually, and waiting might have meant they ran out of options. Still lukewarm on the deal, though.

They both have checkered health records.
One goalie had to go.
I fault the coach & skaters more than the goalies for last season but I did not expect a big return for either of them.
I don't know much about the players they got so I don't have a very solid foundation for taking a position.
I'm close to where you are. It is not something I would have done ...

In isolation I’m not sure it’s something I’d have done. But if it’s setting the table for 2 or 3 more moves which have some level of (hopefully logical and thought out) strategy behind them then it may all look different in a few weeks.

I reserve my judgment.

This is an encouraging scouting report (a year or more old)
October 2025 – It was an impressive season for Andrae, though he has been (and may continue to be) a victim of being on the wrong roster. With the Flyers having numerous puck-moving defensemen competing for ice time and a roster spot, and with several diminutive young players already on the roster, Andrae was frequently sent to the AHL due to his exemption from waivers. In the end, he played 42 games with the Flyers, getting sheltered minutes and second-unit PP time. He is a hard-working player with skills that are arguably the best on the blue line for Philadelphia. His possession metrics are through the roof – he was second on the team in Corsi-for relative%. He finds openings and threads the needle better than anybody, though sometimes it can be a risky pass. Despite his 5-9 frame, he holds his own.

I also read somewhere that he plays both sides

He is not waivers exempt (neither was Benoit or Woll)

Anthony/MLHS hits on something that makes keeping Stolarz a bit more palatable: he's legitimately good at puck handling in the trapezoid, a la Brodeur as the third D. Having him around more to impart that skill (by osmosis or something more directed) can really help mobilize the backend group and buy them time and space to push the puck to more dangerous handlers. For all of Woll's puck stopping talents, he was not much better than Benoit at moving the puck.

Also: Woll is not doing this:

Big picture is going to be very important when evaluating the moves this team makes in the offseason. I suspect this won't be the last move we're collective lukewarm on, but, if the sum of the moves makes the team better, that's all that really matters.

I guess the return for any goalie was always going to be underwhelming, at first anyway, since I always hear goalies aren't worth as much on the trade market. The more I hear about Andrae the better I feel about the trade. I did like Woll, and would have preferred Stolarz the other way, but he probably wouldn't have fetched as big a return.

I distinctly remember making fun of Ersson's capabilities (lack thereof) in a GDT, so that's not great. But he is also on pace to simply not be qualified and released into the market.

Perhaps they sign him, and drop him to the AHL and figure if he's taken, oh well. Just letting him reach FA would be odd. Why trade for him at all? Unless they try low balling him first.

It feels like for years, even with a huge analytics team, we weren't able to scoop up guys like this that ended up having success. Hopefully this is a turning point and we get one right.
The way Emil Andrae is described in the tweet, it smells like a bit like the type of defender Troy Stetcher was when he had that super run after being picked up here.

If we get a 24 year old version of peak Troy Stetcher (and with further upside) that's at least a big upgrade on Benoit. Might even be an upgrade on Rielly... one can hope

Wow, surprised at how quickly this board has thrown Woll under the bus. Leafs give up on homegrown goalies way too soon.

herman, I distinctly remember (well, maybe just remember-ish) your comments in that GDT too. I think you predicted where Matthews would beat him, and he did.
