Woll and Benoit traded to Philly

Small PSA, I know we love our "General" threads here but if the first major trade of the offseason doesn't deserve it's own thread I don't know what else would.

Haha, I was debating it (also relying on mod-powers). but the return is all 'futures' (they're both RFAs)

At first glance, this trade feels very, very underwhelming and pointless. Chayka's really betting on some untapped potential from Andrae (which could very well exist).

Emil Andrae is likely the key piece

Converting offensively pointless and defensively funny Simon Benoit for a zippy little LD (from the Swedish leagues, where Sundin and some of our best scouts will be quite familiar), and punting Woll to a team desperate for goaltending for a pick and project that can be stuffed in the minors.

Draft scouting profile for Emil Andrae: https://smahtscouting.com/2020/06/13/scouting-report-emil-andrae/
Does Morgan Rielly type things with a bit of psycho chihuahua energy

Samuel Ersson is also a known quantity to our new Swedish overlord. Perhaps Curtis Sanford can work his magic with another smaller Hildeby.

Good news everybody! Emil Andrae is good! 😃

Current RFA, if they can get Emil done at something like $1.85m x 2 years that would be a tidy piece of business.

Andrae for Benoit seems like a decent swap. Benoit did a lot of good here to re-establish himself as a NHL defenceman after Anaheim, but simply put kind of had to go for the Leafs to get more puck moving ability from the backend.

That leaves basically a 3rd for Woll. I dunno. I guess the writing was on the wall for a goalie eventually. Stolarz' value was likely gone at this moment. Hildeby as a non-established guy also doesn't carry much of any value. I think a 2nd rounder would have been a lot more fair.

I do think they're clearing the deck a bit for the eventual Rielly exit, since they found a younger option for his niche.

Andrae trapped behind some new fancy options that Philadelphia picked up recently so didn't really get good looks by the time his ELC expired.

I need someone to explain this one to me.

Woll is under contract at $3.6m for the next 2 years. Benoit and the pick even out to me.

How is Woll only worth a throwaway waivers goalie and a 24 year old d-man that plays 15 mins a game?

My assumption is that the Leafs targeted Emil Andrae and were prepared to pony up for him and in general, goalies are not returning a lot currently in the NHL trade market.

Leafs probably had to move a goalie this offseason, tough to tell what would have been possible in a Woll trade. I think Woll is good and have some value. I can think of a few teams that really could use him.

I understand the need to do this, I just thought that it'd be a little more than what we got back. Who knows since I don't know anything about Aundrae.

Woll/Stolarz had an amazing season as a true duo but neither could do much when asked to do anything else other than every other game. Being injured frequently, MIA, and not playing well this year bottomed out his value.

I know nothing about any of the players they got so I'm going to try to remain calm...though I really thought Woll would net a better return if he was traded. So next year - Hildeby and AA as the goalies when Stolarz inevitably gets injured. AA has looked really good in the Calder Cup run at least.
