Wild buying out Suter and Parise

Not sure if there is an offseason thread, but wow!

Report: Wild to buy out Parise, Suter https://www.tsn.ca/1.1667311.1626191890

So they are going to have $12.8M in dead cap next year and $14.6M for the 2 years after that??

Crazy.

Cleared two slots this year for the expansion draft, but yeah a lot of cap crud until after 2024

Both guys would be interesting if they were interested in Thornton-type deals.

You are potentially aging out your roster but it would be especially interesting if they protected Kerfoot and exposed Holl/Dermott only to add Suter in place of the guy they lost.

Yeah that's a lot worse than I would have expected. Surprised they couldn't have just gotten them to waive their NMC for the draft to keep Dumba. It's not like Seattle was touching those contracts.

Yeah, I'd be pretty interested in both. Curious to see what they sign for, and if they try to stay together. Guessing Lou will be all over both of them.

I hate for this to be another "I told you so" but the panic over these kinds of deals and how "unfair" they were was like people on existing phone contracts losing their minds over the low teaser rates for new customers. The pain was always going to be in the back end of these deals and they were fundamentally risky.

Not to worry though, we only lost a whole half season because of the whining.

Minnesota's owner signing those two contracts and then immediately leading the lockdown efforts will always be funny/sad/infuriating.

Going for Eichel?
So confusing. Why go for Eichel if you have that much dead cap space?

You have that much dead cap next year so that's future Guerin's problem. But this year, you can buy low on an Eichel swap (which opens a bit of space too), and then ride the ELC train to fill the gaps. UFAs will want to play with the Wild kids and Eichel.

The Wild buying out the cap twins so they can protect Dumba so he can be part of the trade for Eichel is funny to me.

Ridiculous. Just ridiculous.

That being said, Suter would be a great add to the blueline. Parise could be an interesting depth piece/value play.

The buyouts block about 18 league minimum deals from being signed in the NHL next three seasons.

Presumably they would be giving up something from their team so this isn't the perfect way to look at it but if they acquired Eichel and signed the following RFAs for the following amounts (these are just guesses that I didn't spend more than 60 seconds thinking about): Kaprizov $7mil, Fiala $5mil, Greenway $3mil, that would leave them with about $1.7mil in cap space with a 13-man roster in 22/23.

They don't really have a ton that they can move without ultimately coming out of the offseason as a weaker team. More talented up front, maybe, but, overall, weaker.

I assume they tried to trade them and nobody wanted the players?  They could have saved money had they traded for scraps and offered to eat 50% of the contract.  The dead cap hit on those 2 with the buyout is nuts.
