I just don't get it from the Islanders perspective. They don't improve near enough to warrant giving up those picks. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if Moulson out does Vanek rest of season.

The Sabres weren't going to re-sign him anyways, and while I'm sure the Isles think they can sign him it's still a risk that they don't, and they still only marginally improve I think - their issues remain in net.

Hoglund's aren't capable of that kind of consistency. Vanek is a much better player though.

By that I mean, there used to be Bossy/Trottier, where Bossy the pure scorer fed off passes by Trottier. The two went together very well on the ice. Same here for MouIson/Tavares.

He's more talented than the average Hoglund type, but, that also means he's going to be able to take advantage of being his team's Hoglund better. His production numbers are almost certainly going to take a serious hit having to play the rest of the season with the lack of talent in Buffalo.

They've also lost their 3rd and 5th leading scorers from last season, which included their #1 defenceman. There was a very good chance they weren't making the playoffs before this deal, but, now, I think the odds are that they squeak in again.
