So, Lombardi refuses to give Doughty more that Kopitar's 6.8 mil. Why aren't there at least 15 other GMs outting out 6.9 mil. offer sheets? I know I would.

Busta Reims said:If it came down to getting a handful of draft picks or losing Doughty, Lombardi would compromise and match. Any serious attempt to pry Doughty away via offer sheet would have to be in the $8M+ range, which makes it a tough fit under the cap for most teams that can afford that contract. It also means sacrificing four 1st round picks, which means you really need to feel your team is essentially a Doughty away from being a legit contender, and, well, the teams with cap space aren't and need the cheap talent from those picks to be competitive - basically, making the acquisition of Doughty a waste as he's unlikely to have enough of an impact on the team's progress without more talent coming in up front.
On top of that, to get Doughty to sign the offer sheet, you'd have to be a team he'd want to play for, and, my guess is he's not interested in the teams with the cap space to make such a move for him.

Saint Nik said:If you're right though the only two teams I see that might work under your criteria are the Ducks and the Red Wings and I don't think the Ducks want to spend that much money and that would be about the least Ken Holland-y move I could think of.
Busta Reims said:That's the thing - the teams that have the cap space, the appeal, the available picks, the financial ability and prospect/roster depth to make this kind of move just don't exist. There's a pretty good reason that Doughty hasn't been presented with an offer sheet he'd be willing to sign - and that's ignoring the fact that he just might want to stay with the Kings - and that's that there just aren't any real good matches.

Not in the same galaxy. There's no way that LA would even think of dealing Doughty for question marks.
And we might get one of Doughty's sticks in return..... ;Dmoon111 said:Offer Komisarek, Finger, and Bozak.

Yeah it's not going to happen but y'know, just trying on a semi-runaway-and-hide offer.

We're also talking about somebody who might just be the most valuable defenceman in the league. But you're right. If you ranked each teams top-3 players or most valuable trading chips, the Leafs would probably rank in the bottom-10.
Saint Nik said:It's tough to imagine that if Doughty were made available to the league that the best they'd do is Kessel, Schenn and a terrible contract.

Having not a single (Z.E.R.O) "franchise" type asset (current player or prospect) certainly stings. I'm only guessing but I'm thinking 20 of 30 teams have at least one?
