It is interesting that a rich team like Philadelphia and a cash strapped team like the Oilers are both not respecting the 5 year limit that the league proposed as the new CBA law.

Could be a sign that these guys know that proposal isn't going to fly. There's just so much middle ground between 5 years and the silly deals that Parise and Suter got.

For a year maybe. He put up 20 goals in his rookie year and 27 in his second professional season. He still has one more year under his rookie ELC before this kicks in.
Assuming modest progression over the next year, he would firmly be in the 30 goal, 70 point territory and that pretty much puts him in that 6M territory.

It is weird to see a perceived small market and a big market doing the same types of deals the owners are asking to not be able to do in the future. The reality is that both teams make money and have owners with money to burn.
Edm probably needs to take advantage of the window they have to sign longer term deals to entice these guys to stay and reduce the risk of them walking later on. Philli just seems to like giving everyone they want a crazy deal no matter what... which I am in part kind of envious of.
