It's not a surprise or anything but:

They'll be joining the Pacific division (instant geographical rivalry with Vancouver) and Arizona will be moving to the Central division (something that they apparently aren't happy with, as it means increased travel and they're poor). That finally gives all 4 divisions 8 teams.

This conveniently means the 2020 lockout won't effect them!

To start in 2021-2022....

So, given that they've already announced they will keep the same expansion rules..... yeah, way too far ahead to make a protected list except the big 4 up front and Rielly

Do you think they should protect Bracco, yes or no?

Potato GM Version:

Protected:
Matthews
Marner
Nylander
Tavares
Kadri
Kapanen
Grundstrom ?
Rielly
Dermott
?
Goalie

EDIT:  WHOLY SHIT I FORGOT ABOUT MY BOY DERMOTT.  And yes, I don't expect Liljegren up this year, so he should be exempt

By that time it'll probably be Kansas City or Houston's probelm.

I honestly don?t like it, how big is big enough? The 650M doesn?t even raise the cap? Further dilute the talent pool.

I think as long as Liljegren doesn't play 10 games this season he's going to be exempt. If he plays in the NHL next season then 19/20 will be considered his first professional season and 20/21 would be his second professional season.

So that would mean we could comfortable fit Rielly, Dermott, and someone else (Gardiner maybe, or Oz, or another top-4 guy we pick it between then) on our list.

I don't think Lilypad will be ready even next season so no worry there.  Although there is worry as to whether he ever lives up to the potential we thought he had.

Well, Liljegren is only 19, so I would give him another year or two.

Because he'll turn 20 next season will actually count as his first professional season as far as the expansion draft goes even if he's in the AHL. But that doesn't make a difference.

I believe you are correct.  For some reason I thought if you played two full seasons (ie 82 + 82 starting next year) that you wouldn't be exempt, but I was wrong.

Also, I forgot Dermott because I had a brain fart... he'd be protected for sure.

Oh I know, I'm not throwing the towel in by any means, I'm just wondering why Sandin has been able to adjust so quickly in the AHL at 18 and Lily is still seemingly struggling at times.  Have you noticed I'm on the Sandin hype train?

Liljegren's got higher expectations and one missing year of development, but acquitted himself well in his first season as an 18 year old in a league dominated by almost NHLers, former NHLers, and generally older, stronger, faster professionals. Fans are probably looking for the offensive pop that put Liljegren on the radar, but he's being put through a program of defensive development, so there's definitely a learning curve to what amounts to re-wiring your brain.

Sandin has looked good early on playing essentially the same game he played in the Soo, in that he already knows the North American rink angles, the Soo plays the style that is similar to what the Marlies do (coached by former Soo head coach Sheldon Keefe, built by former Soo GM Kyle Dubas). It doesn't show up in the highlights but there are still moments he gets lost in his own zone (Babcock's system is very fluid, and AHL is messy in general). His scoring is a mirage for the most part in that he (and all of our system's defensemen*) are just shooting to get the puck on net through traffic, and plinkos (Polaks? Hainseys?) happen (Sandin's first goal).

* Our defense isn't shooting for goals unless they're sweeping in as F3/4 into soft ice at the circles or lower (Rielly's often the recipient, Ozhiganov's first NHL goal is a good example too)

Yeah I mean I think I like Sandin just about as much as the next person but he's played 12 AHL games and Liljegren is getting the tougher minutes at the moment.

If the players got 50% of $650M expansion fees (they don't), the cap would move $10.5M. I suppose the cap would likely go backward the following year though.

650/31/2 = 10.48

Why expand? Why not relocate? Why are some owners in the business of losing money? Rich guys hobby?

It's a nice toy and you get a pretty sweet tax write-off.

I'm not sure who from the Athletic has said it (or it might be here), but Sandin seems to be a "safer" choice to eventually be a Top 4 D (2nd pairing).  Liljegren has the higher ceiling, but the lower floor in terms of what he can become...

Sandin already shows good positioning and gap control, and great patience in terms of creating zone exits but doesn't have high-end offensive talent despite the output so far in the AHL.  But he is nowhere near ready for the NHL yet, probably not even ready for tougher AHL minutes either.

Liljegren is probably the best stretch passer in the organization already and has great offensive instincts that give him that higher ceiling, but it all depends on how much he improves his defensive play which is a real work in progress and makes his floor lower.

Pretty sure that was Jeff Veillette.
