Russian jet carrying hockey team Lokomotiv crashes

I have really fond memories if Korolev. My wife and I still chuckle about his interviews - every response began with "yah sure". I also remember how proud he was to become a Canadian citizen. He will be missed (as will all of the others)
 
Upon hearing the news Lokomotiv player Sergei Ostapchuks mother died of a heart attack according to Stan Galiev.
 
So the plane clipped a tower taking off? I'm still in shock over hearing an entire pro hockey team has been killed!
9 ex-NHL players, including a couple ex-Leafs, among the dead.  :'(
 
Just heard about the accident , what a tragic lost to the family and friends of this team . R.I.P  Igor and Alexander
 
Statement on the KHL website:

We are only beginning to understand the impact of this tragedy affecting the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl club on the friends we?ve lost and the international hockey community.

First and foremost, our condolences go out to the families of the players, coaches and staff lost in today?s tragedy. We know that there are many in the KHL family who will be grieving with us.

As the investigation of this tragedy progresses we will work closely with investigators, government officials, club executives and the Yaroslavl community. We are working to find an appropriate way to honor this club and begin the healing process from the deep loss so many of us feel today.

We are aware that many of you have questions. This tragedy remains our primary focus. We ask for patience as we find an appropriate way to proceed with the 2011-2012 season. We will continue to communicate our plans as they take shape.

Very sensitively worded.  What a colossal task they have ahead of them.
 
Think the NHL will do something?  Boogaard, Rypien, Belak, and an entire KHL team have died recently.  Maybe a moment of silence at each home opener?
 
I hope we never find out ..but my mind wanders to the idea ...what would happen if the nhl just up and lost a team like that?  ...i guess how the khl reacts might provide a clue...

I think that would be honorable and wouldn't mind if that happened at all.

The unfortunate truth is that they have to. It's like the awkward conversation George has with Keith Hernandez in the locker-room - with so many teams flying around so many times a season, the odds are, unfortunately, just not in favour of something like this never happening.

Nothing much, if any, has changed concerning aviation safety in Russia, a holdover problem from the communist era.

Truth is, airline and general transportation safety has always been an issue in the former communist Eastern Europe, just that in Russia, the problems remains untamed and unattended to ( for whatever reasons remain).

I know some Romanian friends from Bucharest who, even today, refuse to fly via their own country's airlines, due to a disproportionate uncertainty concerning safety. 

This whole safety scenario hits close to home.  My cousin and his wife (& her family), embarked earlier in the year, on a Baltic cruise.  The boats used for this a long & wide.  Safe yes.  And no.  The no part comes on the part of the boat operator, giving the passengers plastic liquor glasses filled with shots of vodka, and sipping it (bottle-wise) himself.  Well, as we all know, alcohol & driving, whether it be a vehicle, or a boat, don't mix, as it implicates the very essence of sober-minded safety, and endangers all.

What happened was that the boat operator obviously was oblivious to what was happening at sea, as my cousin & his wife let out a scream to get his attention, while everyone else panicked, upon seeing another boat of same dimensions close in, approximately 15ft. away, ready to slam said boat!  The operator realized his error and thankfully, veered his boat away, to a more proper distance, to safety.  Thank God for that.  Close call.

(My cousin & cousin-in-law vowed to never take a Baltic cruise ever again).
