...
Rypien, who signed with the Winnipeg Jets in July, had missed most of last season because of a leave of absence from the Canucks for personal issues.

Local RCMP told The Globe and Mail on Monday night that the death was not suspicious.
...
Off the ice, however, he battled depression, and his leave of absence last November was the second he took as a member of the team in the past three seasons.

... the Jets gave him a chance to re-establish his career there when he was signed a one-year, $700,000 (U.S.) contract as a free agent this summer.

?Everyone that knows me, knows that everything that was happening didn?t reflect me as a person and it?s not like I was doing anything wrong,? Rypien told the Winnipeg Free Press at the time. ?I went through a couple of things I had to deal with, I got over it ? it took longer than I wanted.

?But just the interest people had in me and the belief people had in me ? it means a lot to me. It makes me believe even more in myself. They see something in me as a person that maybe sometimes you don?t see yourself. They point that out and then you believe in yourself more and then hope you reach the potential they see and you see in yourself.?

Very sad

Yet another enforcer goes down.  Depression?  This seems like a trend among these types of athletes.  No one, IMHO, enjoys being one.  Whatever it is, whatever it was... R.I.P. Rick Rypien.
Condolences to the family.

Sad news.

However, don't let a terrible tragedy like this stop the Canucks from talking conspiracy and litigation.  I have no idea what is wrong with the idiot who would put those words in a quote when they weren't there in the first place, but nothing says grieving like screaming about lawsuits directly after a stupid, stupid error in a paper.

My condolences go out to the Rypien family who have to deal with their loss.

I don't know how Gillis figures that it was done 'with a purpose', it seems to just have been shoddy editing/taking from Wikipedia: http://vansunsportsblogs.com/2011/08/17/toronto-stars-rypien-gaffe-was-unfortunate-but-canucks-should-just-let-it-go/

Terrible news about Rypien.  I always get a weird feeling when I read about things like how Sunday night he called the Jets and was looking for ice in Winnipeg when he got there Monday, and then this happens.  I don't know why, just do.

As the article from the link above states...

...if the Canucks are wise, they?ll just let this one go. It won?t be long before someone in their organization makes an honest mistake as well and they require the same level of understanding.

That, would be the wise thing to do.

"Symptoms of CTE include depression and suicidal tendencies. We don't know anything about Rick Rypien's death today but if anybody wants to place a cash bet that it wasn't suicide and he didn't have CTE I'm willing to give you good odds...."

The above statement is attributable to a Pension Plan Puppets blog.  I wouldn't doubt the same.  No one yet knows what Rypien was going through, but, if it had nothing at all to do with medications/alcohol similar to Boogaard, then, CTE definitely took it's toll on the young athlete's mental state.  This is just a pre-supposition, of course.

When one considers the fact that the late Bob Probert was diagnosed as having CTE, and that his mental state had declined while in his '40s, (even though Probert died from heart failure), it tells a terrible tale of what fighting and it's toll take on these athletes.

I dunno if anything can or should be said about what happened at this point, look at Shawn Tompkins, peak condition and a heart attack takes him at 37.

I'm inclined to agree as this seems like a textbook case of people trying to use this sad case to make some kind of point with tons still unknown about what happened but the flip side to that is that it certainly seems as though there's a good chunk of info out there that isn't being released for whatever reason so it's tough to say who knows what.

If the autopsy comes back with an aneurysm as the cause of death for example, a number of folks may not look very good discussing his personal depression issues with the media.

There's a number of ways a young person can pass away without it being suicide. I think it would have been better to wait for the autopsy results and then see what the family has to say before going into his personal issues.

My guess on this is that people on the inside know, but as of yet the cause of death is off the record.

No matter what though, it's an abrupt and early end to a young life, which remains tragic no matter what the cause of it is.

I'm with jock.

If this wasn't the case, we'd have heard about it by now.

It still sucks, but I agree with a bunch of the articles that suggest that we don't really talk about chemical imbalances in the brain because we associate it with just "being nuts".

I think we all know people that are on medication to deal with chemical imbalances.  But for whatever reason, we (the royal we) don't treat as an illness like many other medical ailments.
