Gardiner is +17 this year. Plus minus is by no means a perfect stat but the idea that his being on the ice hurts the Leafs really doesn't have much in the way of weight behind it.
Hainsey is a +21! Which isn't a counterargument, it's a point against those who constantly slag him.
The problem with rating defencemen on optics is that they generally only get noticed when they do something wrong, and especially so when it ends up in their net.
This is true. However even if the idea that Gardiner makes those mistakes at a higher rate than other defensemen was true then replacing him with someone better in that regard is still going to be difficult. Either you're giving up an awful lot of puck moving and offense or you're looking for someone with his level of offense and who is above average defensively and those guys are hard to find/expensive when you find them.
Yeah. The thing with Hainsey shows up in his possession numbers. There's pretty good reason to think Hainsey is getting carried by his partner while Gardiner is doing the carrying with Zaitsev.
Not sure why Nylander is getting the blame for that period, but there he is winning a puck battle to force a longer possession and then quickly getting off.
