Klein's a steady but very ordinary 2nd pairing type, while Del Zotto is a PP QB type with questionable defence but high-end offensive skills (though, he's struggled this season). While Klein does offer some financial/cap stability for the team, MDZ has the more appealing skill set. He can also learn to play a better defensive game (and have a lot of his deficiencies hidden playing in Nashville's system), whereas Klein isn't going to sudden develop offensive ability. Talent-wise, Nashville comes out ahead here, though Klein fills a need for the Rangers.
I think so as well. Maybe not a robbery, but I think there's a market surplus of 2nd tier PMD that are questionable defensively - Del Zotto being the prime example of one - whereas a steady RH 2nd pairing that's locked up long-term has more value from my perspective.
MDZ is having a bad year. Kevin Klein gives the Rangers something they lack on their blueline with the somewhat poor performances they are getting out of Girardi/Staal/McDonagh.
