R1: Tampa Bay Lightning (A2) vs. Florida Panthers (A3)

This is EXACTLY why signing Reaves was a Pro move (plus beefing up the rest of the squad).

First, Reavo is a deterrent that never needs to be deployed in a series. There will always be a bottom line for selfish nasty bastards on what they can do to Leaf players while he is in the holster.....displayed like a Sherif at a Saloon. You can leave the weapon in the holster. I think Ottawa damage could have been way worse than it was..... comparing the Battle of Florida.

Second, if someone like Bennett or Ekblad or Tkachuk or others do cross the line.... a Wilson style hit on Carrier (clean but devastating) or a Reaves style hit on Darnell Nurse where there is a suspension will change the tide of the game.... and even potentially eliminate a player on the opposing side. No one cares if Reaves gets a 5 game suspension.

The NHL created this atmosphere where elite guys and goalies need protection. Wise men like Treliving had the foresight to deal with this in multiple ways.

Third...... it's now obvious to me that the Leafs get longer suspensions than other franchises, so having a throw away guy like Reaves to eat a multi game suspension beats losing Benoit or McCabe for a few games. That would really hurt Leafs D Core.

What about the guy that elbowed Tavares in the head in OT the last game? Is he at home pissing his pants?

Oh yeah. Reaves is doing a great job keeping other teams in check from the pressbox.

The reason the Leafs-sens series hasn't been more physical is that, outside of Chuckles and Cousins, the sens don't have guys who excel at playing a heavily physical game. When the Leafs faceoff against the Panthers or the Bolts, I guarantee you there will no toning down the physicality because of the "threat" Reaves might dress. In fact, if anything, they'd want the Leafs to waste a spot in the lineup on a guy who can no longer contribute at the NHL level.

I try not to look at incidents from more than a season or so ago when evaluating, as standards shift so much. By current standards, Mikkola only getting a fine is the right punishment.
I know this doesn't help my case with your "ignore things more than a year or two off standard" but Kucherov did a similar thing against Columbus the year they got swept and got 1 game so it's nice to see that hits on crouched vulnerable players have gone from a 3 game suspension to a 1 game suspension, to a fine.

Brad Marchand 4 assists in 5 games +5

Why the hell did Boston give him to Florida for a condition 2nd round draft pick.

Bc Boston teams know how to win. Ownership and management know they don't want to pay his money for next season. But they gave Marchand a solid by sending him for virtually free to the team he wanted to go to....that is warm, low tax and ready to win. Its even an Atlantic rival. But the key point is Boston is not dumb throwing out dumb contracts so as not to hurt feelings.

His contract is up after this season. They were never under any obligation to pay him for next season. Also, don't be surprised if he ends up signing with Boston. Paying him or not paying him next season had nothing to do with the trade. They weren't going to make the playoffs and saw an opportunity to get an asset. Marchand gave them limited options in terms of where he would accept a trade, and they tried to make the best of it. That's the entire story.

I'll add, Marchand might have given Florida as the only place he would agree to be traded to.

There was definitely some suggestion that was the case. While he didn't have full trade protection, the Bruins decided to do right by him and only send him to a team he wanted to play for - or, at least, that's what was being suggested by those in the know.
