Oilers vs. Leafs - Oct. 24th, 7:00pm - SN

Leafs Team Stats
3.85 GF/GP is 5th in the NHL
3.08 GA/GP is 13th in the NHL
30.2 PP% is 3rd in the NHL
95.2 PK% is 1st in the NHL
.615 Pts Win % is 12th in the NHL

Given all the new players and new coaching staff changes, those numbers are collectively above my expectations.

One thing I liked about the game (and for most of the season), is the team's willingness to mix it up. There's a nastiness to Paul, Duhaime, Blueger(+ others) that rubs off on everyone else.

Not 100% ready to call this team a playoff lock, but they look good and are actually fun to watch again.

I just rewatched the game and man Edmonton was desperately trying to draw penalties when they went down. A lot of floppy play and every whistle they initiated a scrum and the officials let them do it. Credit to the team for not getting drawn into the muck. Edmonton clearly knows that their butter is entirely made by McDraisatal Bouchard

The defence also seems to be responding to the extra whacks/presence in the crease, which is very nice to see.

I think I'm willing to call this a playoff caliber team. They are clearly showing they can play at that level. I think the unfortunate reality is that only 5 teams can make it out of the Atlantic and there are likely 6-7 playoff caliber teams in the division. We have a seat at the table at least

I've felt they were in that bubble since the start of the season - towards the lower end of it - as did many of the oddsmakers.
BUT (big BUT) to lose Tanev & Tavares and have some of the other injuries and still look like they are improving/coming together - that is better than I would have expected.

Their #9 dman was in the lineup last night and finished +2 with no GA - against Edmonton

We knew they were one of the oldest teams in the league and that they were likely to have injury problems - particularly on the D and in goal. Unfortunately, it is likely they still will. But to have played .615 hockey against a mix that included good teams after a short preseason, coaching changes, roster changes & injuries and then beat a team like Edmonton (top of the NHL) in Edmonton like they did is definitely uplifting. I was just hoping they might steal a point ....

I would add, as critical as I have been about timeouts, that the coaching is doing much more right than wrong.

Long way to go but very encouraging.

Little things like that McCabe reaction on Hyman, That MacEwan goal, great hand-eye, even the McKenna pass to Leterri's goal.

Little things have improoved.

Matthews, Cowan, huge improovement, Marchenko's trade BIG things have also improoved.
