We're just waiting for @LeafsPR at this point, so may as well jump the gun and get this going.

The pros: Nylander is amazing and I love him.

The cons: It's wild to think that Treliving added $16-20mil in total value to his offseason contract offers based off a 37 game sample. Both sides sure better hope that Willy can continue being a consistent 100+ point (at a minimum) for most of this deal or the fan base and market will eat him alive (not that he'll care).

I locked in the right jersey

Bell and Rogers just paying back a bit of what they earned from the previous negotiation?s coverage.

He?s been the team?s best player this season, and has consistently been excellent for a few years now. Obviously, would have been nice to see him sign for a less, but good to have this settled for the long term.

Once Johnny T is off the books this will be a great dealand Willy is a force. Leafs have been getting a great value on his current contract.

I feel like this deal is pretty reasonable given that if a player with his numbers last year hit the FA market it's hard to imagine them getting a deal substantially less than this. That he's stepped it up a notch this year probably gave him a little more muscle in these negotiations but probably not much more than a 500k to 1m bump. He was always going to be 10-12.

I like watching him play, he's been a consistent playoff performer, happy he'll be around.

What the team currently looks like next season with Willy at $11.5mil and a projected $87.7mil cap:

Knies-Matthews-Marner
_____-Tavares-Nylander
_____-_____-Jarnkrok
Holmberg-Kampf-Reaves

Rielly-_____
McCabe-_____
_____-Timmins

Woll
_____

That's a 13-man roster that leaves just over $22mil in cap space for at least: 3 forwards, 3 defencemen, and 1 goalie which is an average of about $3mil per player if the team runs just a 20-man roster.

Massive cap savings come from having Knies ($925k) at 1LW and Woll ($766k) at 1G. Potential other big cap value guys could come in Hildeby ($843k) taking on a back-up role and Cowan ($935k) and/or Minten ($845k) taking on forward roles. Of the 3 I'd say Hildeby is the most likely just in terms of age/professional experience but also having 2 very young goalie like that would be risky.

Notable RFAs at the moment include: Liljegren, Benoit, Robertson, Gregor. Lily probably comes in somewhere in the $2.5-3mil range while the others, if they're retained, come in at $1mil or lower. Maybe slightly more for Robertson (again if retained) but that's a tricky one.

In an absolutely perfect and totally very likely world where all of our young (and cheap) players just figure it all out and become legit NHLers next season we could have a roster like this:

Knies-Matthews-Marner
Cowan-Tavares-Nylander
Robertson-Minten-Jarnkrok
Holmberg-Kampf-Gregor

Rielly-_____
Brodie-Liljegren
McCabe-Benoit

Woll
Hildeby

That leaves about $12.75mil to sign a defenceman. Perfect for if the Avs decide to buy-out Cale Makar and he becomes a UFA.

It's a lot of money.  2023 Nylander is absolutely worth it.  2022 Nylander as a UFA is probably what he gets.

It will be interesting to see how the Leafs handle Marner.  He's eligible for an extension on July 1st and right now is having a "down" year.  His overall play is down but he's still on pace for 33G 88P right now.  It would be nice if his extension could come in between Matthews and Nylander and if the cap keeps going up that would be perfectly fine.

I'm curious where Tavares comes in for his next contract. Is Malkin a good comparison? He took a cut to $6.1M (7.3%) That'd put JT @ ~$6.5. That'd be nice, but <$8M seems like hopes and dreams to me. Guess it depends on the term.

Still going to be tight depending on where Marner lands. Hopefully, he's not still bitter about his performance bonuses.

Nylander is a great player.

This is a huge fail for the Toronto Maple Leafs. They could have had the player for less in the offseason. As an organization they've bungled the retention of Matthews, Marner, and Nylander. EVERY organization in the NHL seems to retain their star players for less.

Boston is paying $2m less for Pastrnak, over 8 years as well.

The Leafs need all the cap space they can muster and Nylander at $10.5 vs $11.5m is a huge deal.

I really hope they don't write articles after Nylander, Marner, and Matthews all retire about how they weren't able to win it all because the team didn't enough the money to flesh out a roster around them able to win it all.

Still having a hard time imagining a Stanley Cup contending blueline under those parameters. Potential UFA wishlist includes Skjei, Brodie, Hanifin, Tanev, Zadorov, and Lyubushkin.

Happy it's done, and happy it's for 8 years.

This should, hopefully, see Nylander be a career-long Leaf along with Rielly.

Glad it's done.

I am torn between enjoying our "Globe Trotters" versus allocating assets in a way to win the Stanley Cup. Feels closer to a spectacle than a winner still. Let's hope for some brilliant cap allocation this summer toward the blue line. I wouldn't trade many assets this season and go shopping this summer. I don't think adding 2-3 defensemen at the deadline and expecting them to be integral in short order is realistic.

I suspect a lot of the fanbase will always be sore with Nylander.

Management needs to toughen up when negotiations with Marner start. They want to build a winner they need to address the D. Marner has been paid very well last few years for a playoff no show. He doesn't deserve more than Willy as things stand now so if anything you bump him up to Willy's contract at most. If he doesn't like it then try shipping him off. With his contract and JT coming off the cap you got tons of money to sign some D and possibly a net minder to share the net with Woll. Build around 34 & 88.
