Defensively, absolutely. At the plate, not so much. The Jays can definitely manage with his below average bat, but I can definitely see Gibbons not feeling the same way.

I tried posting it here but a cut and paste from Excel looks awful.

I took all mlb starters and averaged their traditional stats and compared them pillar and he is either at,  just above or just below league average in every category.

His OPS+ is 83 which means that when factored for league and park factors he's 17% worse than the average MLB hitter.
 
Good points re Upton.

Here's a question that I don't have the answer to. Why is there a giant inning concern with Sanchez and not Stroman?

Obviously your mileage may vary as to the legitimacy of the answer but I would guess it has to do with their previous history of innings in a season. Sanchez right now is already about at 50% more innings than he's ever pitched in a year. For Stroman to be at a similar point he'd have to get up to 195 innings.

So it's really a theory of gradually extending innings limits. 
 
In the majors, Sanchez is 33, 92 and 132 innings pitched per year in his 3 seasons. Stroman is 130, 27 128 in his. I don't see a big difference. Maybe minor league innings pitched paints a different picture.

It's not a difference of totals, it's a difference in sequence. Teams like to gradually increase workloads. Again, you can agree with that idea or not but that is the idea.
 
Couple other points on the Upton deal:

1. It probably means one of Ezequiel Carrera or Dalton Pompey being used as trade bait, can't see the Jays needing 6 outfielders?

2. Upton is signed through next season, which means he will be one of the starting corner outfielders in 2017. I wouldn't be shocked if Saunders, Bautista and EE all walk at the end of the season, so better load up and go for it all this fall.

Hansel Rodriguez was a rookie ball pitcher who was rated as the #18 prospect in the Jays system so not really a steep price to pay for a guy like Upton when the team is in win now mode. Upton should allow guys to get some rest down the stretch and be available to pinch run in games he doesn't start.

They have to find a way to keep Sanchez in the rotation and focus on adding an arm or two for the pen this week. There isn't a whole lot out there in terms of decent starting pitching and what is out there will come at a steep price. Need to instead find this years Lowe or Hawkins.

Likely doesn't impact Pompey at all, since he's still in Buffalo - at least, not unless the Jays make a move for someone they'll have under control/contract for a few years. Carrera might be moved, but he doesn't exactly have much value.

I don't have an informed opinion. I'm just surprised that it's a huge topic for Sanchez and a non-topic for Stroman. And I don't hear anyone talking about why they're so different.

Joaquin gets traded on his 39th birthday!
The numbers seem to indicate that Benoit is at least somewhat of an upgrade on Storen.
 
Texas is starting to load up for the stretch run.
They got right-handed starter Lucas Harrell and left-handed reliever Dario Alvarez from the Braves for minor league 2B Travis Demeritte, who was their 1st round pick in 2013.
 
The San Francisco Giants acquired infielder Eduardo Nunez from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for minor league pitcher Adalberto Mejia.

Nunez was an All-Star this season and was leading the A.L. in stolen bases at the time of the trade.
 
Padres trade starting pitchers Andrew Cashner and Colin Rea, pitching prospect Tayron Guerrero and cash considerations to the Marlins for starting pitcher Jarred Cosart, reliever Carter Capps, minor league pitcher Luis Castillo and minor league 1B Josh Naylor.
