If the CBA only mentions waivers and trades, then I'd put my money on NMCs not applying to expansion drafts.  You can't make a provision (in this case, the NMC) apply to a situation that is not explicitly part of the contract (in this case, the CBA).

Team targets:

Detroit - Datsyuk is going back to Russia and will leave Detroit with a 7.5M cap hit next year.

Chicago - Have 67 million in salary confirmed and 2.9M in bonuses thanks to Adam Panarin's 70 point season and Roszival playing 50 games.  So 70 million with only 9 forwards, 2 goalies and 6 defensemen.

I think Detroit can easily flip Pavel's contract to a budget team (hello Ottawa  :) despite the Wings saying via that article this morning saying they wouldn't.

Chicago is screwed for sure. I'm sure they will take Cowen for the cap credit as well.  They are going to be so desparate.

Lou Lamoriello says Stephane Robidas's career could be over. Says he doesn't know whether Robidas or Joffrey Lupul will play next season.

I've heard people suggest that we should Robidas Lupul, but never really thought it was plausible. With Robidas there must have been a mutual interest in keeping him out. Lupul's only 32 years old and still has 2 years left on his contract. I don't really see him wanting to call it quits. Unless of course this injury is more serious than we thought (which considering his history might be true).

No, because they'd be buying out the 2016-17 year of his contract. So the buyout would spread over that season and next. The credit would be for the 16-17 season and there'd be a $750k cap hit for the 17-18 season.

I've heard people suggest that we should Robidas Lupul, but never really thought it was plausible. With Robidas there must have been a mutual interest in keeping him out. Interesting. I wasn't aware Lupul's injury was that serious. I feel sorry for him if that's true, he certainly has talent.

Part of me wonders if the real reason the Leafs sent Cowen home is that they already have a deal in place to send him to Chicago for Bickell and a pick.

That issue is further complicated by the fact that the Leafs have a significant amount of Marlies that will be waiver eligible next season too.

It's probably time to try and flip four quarters for a dollar or they're going to lose some players at the end of training camp next season.

I wouldn't be surprised to see some of the RFAs that have been in the organization for a while now included in deals at the draft. The team has a pretty good idea of whether or not guys like Holland, Sam Carrick, Percy, Leivo, and Sparks fit into the future, and some of them won't be back - at least, not on NHL contracts.

In fact, of the RFAs, I think the only ones that are sure bets to be in the organization next season are Rielly, Connor Carrick, and Corrado. Kadri's probably back, as are Marincin and Harrington, but, I wouldn't be placing bets on it happening.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED...now what?

1) Follow and cheer on the Marlies Calder Cup quest, beginning the week of April 18 (a good chunk of this team will represent our Maple Leafs for years and years to come, and they really look like they could bring home the Calder this year!)

2) Watch the NHL draft lottery on April 30. (If you can stomach it. 20% isn't great, but its better odds than any other team has at getting the 1st overall pick)

3) The Stanley cup finals begin on June 1st. No Canadian teams to route for this year, but its not like any of them would have made it this far anyways.

4) Watch the NHL entry draft on June 24. (No matter how the lottery shakes out, this should be the Leafs highest draft pick since 1989, and hopefully since 1985 when they selected a kid named Wendel at the top of the draft)

5) Free agency on July 1st. Does he or doesn't he become a Toronto Maple Leaf??

6) Does Jimmy Vesey sign with Toronto on Aug 15th?

7) World Cup of Hockey, starting Sept 17, should get the hockey juices flowing again before the 2016-17 NHL season begins.

All in all I expect a very, very busy off-season for the Leafs. It has the 'potential' to be the most exciting summer Leaf fans have ever had!

Uh, actually, there are pretty good odds that this will be the highest Leafs draft pick since 2015.
