I mean, the reason we’re hearing this is because sources are willing to share with the media, and that says less about the media or fans than the dynamics of what’s happening in the org (evidently there’s a lot of concern!)
I take it as an index of how surprisingly awful things are right now. If Tie Domi and the suit’s golf buddy are indeed sitting opposite Pelley in the situation room and setting the direction of the front office, that is surprising, and it’s unsurprising that smart folks who’ve been with the team a long time would be sounding the alarm.
I mean, sure, but would he be your 10th choice? 20th? I get the Coyotes were a tire fire but I don't know if that should automatically mean you should cut someone slack for doing a bad job in bad circumstances. You'd hope that the narrative is he did well considering how tough it was despite it not ending well but that really isn't it at all.
The tea leaves so far have been more right than wrong. No one said anything with Gillis was imminent, just that he was one of the initial front runners. Shortly afterward all the news was his name dropped off, especially once we heard Mats' name. There are multiple sources saying the Leafs are likely to make an announcement tomorrow with Mats and Chayka. That's a lot different than what we've heard over the last few weeks. I'm hoping someone isn't telling us something but this doesn't sound like a happy front office, and that's how you get leaks.
