Quiet night for Matthews again. Tired of the dominate one game and then disappear for 2-3. Hope he has his A game Saturday.

The team quit at the end.  No effort in this final stretch with the net empty.

Did they really quit? I don't know if I buy that apart from that the depth scoring wasn't there tonight.

Agreed. They didn't quit. Bad couple of minutes.

I wasn?t talking about the loss as a whole.  I think the Leafs outplayed Calgary and were the better team.  It was more the lack fo energy once the goalie was pulled.  They just didn?t have anything left to mount a comeback attempt

+1 It is games like this that will make it hard to make the playoffs now.

So here's a question based on this thread. Imagine if before the game for some reason you found out the score. Magic Genie, Psychic Powers, Some sort of Back to the Future II-esque obtained future sports book...whatever. You just 100% knew the score would be 4-2 and there weren't any empty netters scored.

Most of us, I think, would be disappointed but see it as a reasonable outcome. The Flames are hot, the Leafs are on the road...a winnable game but also a loseable one and while beaten, the score certainly doesn't indicate that they embarrassed themselves.

So given that, what distribution of goals would somehow be least likely to be commented on as being indicative of "what the Leafs always do" or something as being fundamentally indicative of their lack of character or work ethic as opposed to just the reality that sometimes teams lose games and the Maple Leafs, who aren't a great team, will lose them with some frequency.

Is it the Flames getting their goals in the first? Or is that a showing of how the Leafs can't get off to a good start. Is it the teams trading goals over two periods before giving up a couple in the third or is that just a lesser example of how they "forget to play hockey in the third".

Is it the Flames scoring two, the Leafs roaring back to tie it only for the Flames to get two more? Or is that the worst of both worlds with a bad start and finish?

It may have been quiet on the scoresheet but he played a good game. His defensive game continues to improve and he made a number of good defensive plays. If he didn't hit the post, it could have changed things. He was aggressive along the boards and was using his body to retrieve and keep control of pucks. I have zero issue with his game last night.

I do not understand with 1:30 or so a 5/3 why they don't move the damn puck more right from the get-go.

Why don't they try to get garbage goals? They hardly ever try to take a shot off the pads and grab the rebound.

Exactly.  Run a set play where someone comes off the perimeter and takes a hard shot from in close.

I mean, it must be easy. It's only the NHL and all.

I do strongly feel that this 4-2 loss is way better than if they'd carried a 2-0 lead until late in the 3rd and then gave up 4 goals in the last 30 seconds.

Didn't pay much attention to the game at all, when I did look at it Matthews was making some faux pas, like not holding a good cycle in his own zone, passing to Calgary players, etc.  Counted 5 very bad mistakes and not much good.  This guy is 6'3" 220Lb.  he should be a beast.  Yes he scores but there is a whole lot more in his tank that we are not regularly seeing.  Last night he was not good.

I wouldn't have minded to see Engvall instead of Kapi on the 2nd line. I hope it happens soon.

Kappy just doesn't fit on the LW side, what do y'all think?
