Really?  Naively (I haven't checked salary and term), I would say Columbus made out grand with this deal.

They take on a longer contract, but with a similar cap hit ($4.6M for 3 seasons on Umberger, $4.75M for 5 on Hartnell). Both players are the same age and are both starting to show signs of wear and tear/slowing down, but Hartnell is the better player. All things considered, it's a pretty even deal.

Maybe, but I think another consideration might be that Umberger, who can play some center and kill penalties, is a better fit for the more utility role that might be necessary considering the glut of forwards that Philly has who can fit into the top 6.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Umberger move elsewhere this summer, as he does have the more workable deal, but if they plan on giving Schenn a bigger role next year than Umberger makes more sense on a 3rd line than Hartnell does.

I say that philly wants to get phaneuf but had to ship out hartnell cause they couldn't co-exist together.

Not always effective but you have to give Philly credit for being willing to make moves.

True enough and if there is any team that could probably afford to do that it's Philly. They do have an abundance of forwards IMO. Enough even to trade RJ someplace else? Sure.
