Coyotes officially relocating to Utah

But the land auction itself might now become a problem. One source familiar with the process heard from some potential bidders that "didn't want to be the ones that chased the Coyotes" out of the market.

"Now that the Coyotes have effectively chased themselves out of Arizona, that's a prime piece of property. So I think there will be other bidders," the source said.

I actually do think Utah will make a very good fist of this, though.

I've decided to officially back Outlaws since they aren't using the plural of Mammoths for some reason. Just Mammoth sounds odd.
 
The obvious name choice is the Frost Giants of Utaheim.

But going off what they've pulled together so far:

The Utah Hockey Club
The mascot is a klepto-yeti, fashioned like an albino Gritty wearing a hamburglar mask, riding on a venom-symbiote coated wooly mammoth. Literally, just bleach a backup Gritty suit.

Blizzard, Yeti and Outlaw are all fine, but none are very iconic sounding names.

This was always the expected outcome. The 5 year window was something the league gave out knowing it was extremely unlikely to ever come to fruition.

I guess my only question is why even bother with it.  Merulo has been yet another in a sequential line of terrible owners in Arizona.  He was clearly not pulling his weight in terms of making the franchise viable.  Fans outside Arizona were sick of his nonsense.  Fans of Arizona hate him.  Why even make a token story.  It seems reasonable to just say "the NHL will be back" and leave it at that.

My guess is that it was to appease Merulo and help expedite and help ensure a relatively smooth transition with the relocation. Throw him an essentially meaningless bone to keep any potential nonsense he could have tried to a minimum.
