Blow to the Public: Washington Capitals To Purchase CapFriendly Website, Site Reportedly to Go Dark Following Draft
According to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, the Capitals reached an agreement to purchase the site along with its infrastructure, tools and API and that other teams that had had contracts with CapFriendly to have access these tools were informed that those contracts were being terminated.

CapFriendly is extremely popular, with over 200,000 followers on Twitter/X alone, so not only is this a blow to rival teams. but also a massive blow to the public sphere.

It's also a blow to most everyone who works in and around hockey as CapFriendly was perhaps one of the most frequently visited sites and I can attest to this on a personal level.

I'm sure something else will pop up.
It will take it a while  to become as good.

On the Fan590, The Jeff Marek Show, he and Friedman said some teams are probably panicking because like the Caps they did not have their own software tracking this info. They think the league should provide the info to the league but apparently, the league considers the info confidential.

and I opine that the Islanders only have something now because when Lou left the Leafs, he missed the access he had. Somewhat surprised Vegas does not, even though they employ General Fanager; could just be a data gap in Friedman's sources.

Friedman on NHL/CapFriendly relationship (32TP): "The NHL believes that they should not be in the business of publishing this stuff, as a matter of fact I've been told several times that the relationship between the NHL and CapFriendly was icy"

So CapFriendly was getting their info from the NHLPA? Agents?

Looks like a business opportunity for someone ...

Given how many teams are lacking here, it will likely get picked up in a bidding war.

Honestly 90% of the data on CF's site just came from media members posting the contract details on twitter. CF just did a really good job putting it all in one central place.

They did certainly start to make their own connections to sources as time went on though.

Holy hell I can't wait until Gary (and Colin Campbell and all the other 30+ upper executives that have stagnated the game) gets the hell out of the NHL.  The NHL is a clown show at recognizing how to market their product.

Between sports betting and just analytic fan interest the NHL just seems clueless at recognizing a good thing.

On the day Capfriendly is supposed to go down, PuckPedia finally released their armchair GM feature:

https://x.com/PuckPedia/status/1809304969310511570

At first glance, works pretty well. I actually really like just having a "SIGN" button next to RFAs, UFAs, and unsigned prospects. Aside from that the UI is pretty darn bland. I'm sure that'll be improved at some point, especially once their ad revenue starts getting a serious boost after today.

Capfriendly is still up as of 9:30 today.  Figured it would be offline by now.

The puckpedia site is probably a few edits away from being worth playing around with.  I find their entire site is really bland.  I like the content on their roster pages but everything being white background it gets hard to look at after a while just being black text on a white background.  Things blend in.  I do like that just hovering over salaries will show NTC/NMC details (eg. Domi having a 13-team NTC) though.

CapFriendly are still selling premium subscriptions.

If you buy one of those you get to call Capitals line changes via a voting button during games
