According to capgeek, Canucks payroll next season is $64,402,778 with only 17 players signed, that's already over the cap.  Add to that the fact that the Sedin brothers are in the last year of their contract and need to be signed.  Do they get traded?

If the Sedins are traded, they are absolutely rebuilding. I can't see that happening yet.

I actually would like to see Gillis remain as their Gm.One or two more years and he will have torn apart everything Burke and Nonis built over there.

They could also be difficult to move. They both have NTCs, and they could very well insist on being traded to the same team. How many teams out there have the assets to make that kind of move without putting themselves into a similar position to where the Canucks are? If the twins leave, it'll be as free agents.

AV likely gone for sure but I can't see how Gillis makes it out of this with his job intact.

He has saddled the franchise with a ridiculous amount of $$ tied up in bad, ummovable contracts. They are $100k over the cap for next year with only 17 contracts. They likely have to amnesty both Ballard and Booth, and he will again unlikely find anyone willing to take on Luongo. There is no way they can buy out Luongo. It's just too much cash.

My bet is they end up being forced to move Schneider. Teams will call for him. 

On top of all this, he could have moved Luongo to the Leafs one of several times if he wasn't so adamanet the trade be a grand slam for him. All he had to do was keep some salary.  Now he gets to keep ALL of Luongo's salary. Leafs can't be interested at all anymore. 

The Hodgson for Kassian trade looks terrible, especially since they badly needed a centre all year.  he then had to deal for Roy to make up for it, and that didn't work out very well either.

The Nucks are a contractual disaster, an aging team that looks like it could be very close to needing a major overhaul. 

Gillis deserves to walk for making a mess of a good thing.  IMO they look a lot like the Flames did the year or two after they went to the semis... once a contender quickly fell apart mostly due to terrible GM decisions.

Agree with everything here. My worst nightmare is Gillis sticks around, steals Eakins from our organization and gets the team back on track next season....

That was my reaction this morning as I checked the score and had my coffee. In the end it doesn't really matter to me as I'm just focused on the Leafs series, but it was a nice to see.

Gillis didn't look too comfortable or confident in his end of year PC. "We're going to do a thorough review of everything in the organization. Five years ago we reset. It's time to do it again," said Gillis

He said the chances of Luongo remaining with the team are very slim. He complained about the lockout and the changes in the way the game is played (that others obviously saw when he didn't) as reasons for them falling short. He floated lots of excuses.

He mentioned them having no choice but to go with unproven youth because the cap is falling 10%.

There was a part of me that wondered if he knows he's toast by his mannerisms and what he said but I could be reading too much into it.

He hopes to present a plan for going forward this week. I think the quote above may bury him - why should he get another chance to "reset" like he did five years ago?

Seriously, Gillis, you did a "reset" 5 years ago? What kind of reset leaves you with the same coach that was already there, basically the same core for the roster and the same starting goalie? You tinkered with the supporting cast. That's it. All the major players that were there before you were hired are still there now. Where's the reset?

So he added a couple of 2nd pairing dmen and a 3rd line in five years. And as a result, the team declined.

Couple that with the playoff results and the financial mess and I don't know how he justifies getting another chance to "reset". It's got to be a really tough sell.

I remember when BB was hired here almost every nucks fan to a person said that BB was the reason they never won and that he never did anything of note for them.

I really wonder what they all think now of Gillis at the helm? He has done nothing but screw with players publicly (Lou), sign or take on asinine contracts(Lou,Ballard,Booth &Garrison) and trade away players like Hodgson for what turned out to be table scraps in Kassian ( most people saw that when that deal went down ) and now the goaltending situation and the cap situation.... you decide which is worse. He has shot himself in both feet and in the face and now is hoping for a miracle. One that isn't coming.

Feels damn good to be a Leafs fan right about now... even if we are in trouble in our series. We at least are more then in it still, and we won a game, can the nucks even say that? Thank god... NO

Every one of those guys except Schneider had played in the NHL for a Nonis team - before Gillis arrived.

Schneider was a 2004 #1 Burke pick who played his first AHL season out of college during Nonis' last season in Vancouver. So four years after he was drafted, still doing well, they had a pretty good inkling he'd be decent at that point.

He had a first round pick in four of his five drafts - albeit a lowish one. Yet most of his picks haven't made it to the NHL - barely getting a sniff. HF ranks them at 27th in prospects.

With Hodgson (& Sedin & Kesler), Gillis was set at center (a hard position to stock). All he had to do over five years was populate the wings with some quality muscle, improve his checking line and get a couple of good top 4 dmen.

He needed to find four decent players for the top 9/top 4 - less than one per season. And now he wants to "reset"?

I'll be dumbfounded if he survives.
