You might see some footage of linesman Ryan Daisy getting injured off a faceoff in the Montreal/Buffalo game tonight.

No news will be forthcoming today re: Kindel's situation; availabilities and practice canceled for the day. Dubas is scheduled to speak tomorrow.

MTL was up 3-1, 9 mins into the 3rd

Sharks got it to OT

Talk about taking a stupid, needless penalty ...

Celebrini (2G, 1A in the game) made him pay with resulting OT PP goal
You know, It's kind of interesting to hear the level of incredulousness from the announcers about this play (which, granted, was a touch soft for OT but it was a ridiculously dumb move and absolutely interference) when you continually have to watch Toronto subjected to so many ridiculous calls against with nary a peep out of anyone calling the game.

LK saves me a few posts with his monitoring of the refs. :)
I try to be objective but it does seem like the Leafs get more than their fair share of bad or disproportionate calls against them.
Maybe Leafs fans are more knowledgeable and passionate resulting in them getting on the refs more.
I have no firm explanation for it.

I heard this morning that the Leafs are 5th in the league is penalties drawn, compared to dead last last year. It's because they are skating more this year, and teams have to do something to disrupt them. Doesn't explain the calls that go against them though.

Some of my feelings may be a hangover from last year though, if you read LK's posts in the Game Day threads this season, he documented some bad calls fairly well. As well, the Leafs have the 2nd most short handed situations in the league this year. The difference is they got two more PPs than Pks this season vs 32 more PKs than PPs last season. All those PKs while they don't exactly strike me as the dirtiest/sleaziest team in the league.

No, but that could also be a byproduct of just being slower on defense. There have been some incidents though where the ref has blatantly gotten wrong too, like the high sticking call on Celibrini the other night. That was clearly his own players stick.

I've been looking at it but it is hard to pin down precisely with certainty based upon some measurable facts.

In terms of Berube's style of play, arguably point well taken by you. Clearly, Hiller has emphasized more skating and we have been seeing that - no measurement required.

In terms of raw speed on the roster, the jury for me is out. I think they made some emphasis on acquiring speed this summer.

However, of the 8 fastest skaters on the Leafs last year per NHL Edge, five are gone and only two (prior to last night): McKenna & Duhaime have put up NHL Edge speeds faster than the 8th player last year: Lorentz. Having said that, there is potential on the roster for them to be faster but it takes NHL edge time and game circumstances to get those faster skating times. Probably 10 to 30 games more.

"There have been some incidents though where the ref has blatantly gotten wrong too," LK has covered a lot of those for us.

First of all, there are real limits to NHL edge stats. We have to be careful how much we read into them. In other words, I wouldn't read much into them - they're a very crude check.

But some other observations from the raw skating speed stats
I compared this year vs last year:
This year, on NHL edge, the slowest 6 skaters are dmen. The exception: Rielly is in the middle of the roster at 11th. Last year, Rielly, OEL & McCabe were 6th, 9th and 10th in skating speed. Many of their dmen are well below last year's average.
I wonder if that is because not only did Hiller want more skating but he wanted to move the puck quickly. Passing is faster than skating. So I wonder if that result is a product of what Hiller is having them do - pass the puck more up the ice to advance it. It is data that might indicate that they're not lugging the puck as much.

Another observation:
When I compared max skating speed of recent seasons on last year's roster to this years, the average speed for this year is 0.1mph faster. So they are effectively the same average skating speed. Time weighting it might deliver a different result. I couldn't be bothered.

I don't know how useful that stuff is. I was curious.
