They don't have the space to sign all 3. Someone of significance is leaving and hopefully it's one of Bennett or Marchand. Leafs are stronger on the D side of things.

* Leafs tried to talk to Marner; Marner's camp not answering
* "If the free agency window was still in place, it would be an all-time week."
* rumour: " this may not be a July 1st thing. That Marner’s choice could be to set up Zoom, or if teams want, in-person meetings on July 1st or after, and then maybe he goes and visits one or two places,” Friedman said. “I think, and nobody is confirming this, I think the Maple Leafs were offered one of the meetings too"

To which I say, this would be great! grind the contender's market to a halt on July 1 because Marner wants to be wined and dined and schmoozed like LeBron. Leafs FO should be relatively free to just move on.

Probably right, they seem to do what it takes when there's a player they want.
I'm still betting on LA.
San Jose would be a really interesting one. I don't think they have official roles with the team but IIRC Thornton and Marleau are still semi-involved with the team at least in an informal sense. Both players are obviously big influences on Marner as he grew up in the NHL (maybe not for the best). You would think the pair would be trying to sell Marner on San Jose.
San Jose is also in a very similar spot that the Leafs were in prior to them signing Tavares. Celebrini, Smith, Eklund, Dickinson is a stacked core to have, plus they'll add another player with the 2nd overall pick. Would Marner be their Tavares? Does that work out any better there than it did here?

Grinding the UFA market to a halt could be beneficial for the Leafs because I doubt they will be waiting around for Marner's decision.
Who was the last player who actually did a ‘sign and trade’? I can’t think of anyone who actually did that.
I don’t think the leafs have any actual interest in signing Marner. I think this is a PR game now where the leafs are feigning interest.

I don't think the Leafs or Marner want a reunion. The feeling is mutual.
I think the only thing the Leafs would change is not getting anything in return for Marner leaving the Leafs.

Matthew Tkachuk when he requested a trade out of Calgary was moved in a sign and trade, as he was RFA.
Other players have had picks for signing rights, but that's not quite the same. Mikko Rantanen's most recent trade was basically a sign and trade (just not on paper) as he was traded to Dallas with the understanding that he'd be signing an extension there, which got Carolina some assets in return.

Technically, Tkachuk to Florida was a sign-and-trade, though, as an RFA. You don't really see any for UFAs, but, at the same time, you don't see a ton of guys who other teams might pay to get the extra year on hitting the open market, either.
