2025-26 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

I know that this must contrarian for a Leafs fan on this board, but I'm rooting for the Habs. Growing up in the 70s as a Leaf fan they were always my second favorite team because they were winning.

Minor rumour about Ron Francis who is leaving the Kraken being potentially

Ontario boy. Immediate credibility. Don't know enough about what he's done with the Canes and Seattle to know if he's a contender or not.

He really needs those 3 goals to hit the magical 30 goals instead of 28 or 29 that seems to give silly contract bumps.
I think he's pretty much there for negotiations. His ice time is well down compared to most of those around him in goal scoring. I'm sure his agent will point that out.
He's had some puck luck in Seattle. But they gave him top 6 minutes with some good players and he responded with 8 goals in 13 games.
He's getting 2 mins/game PP time in Seattle vs 48 secs with the Leafs and played with some of their top guys. He's been in on 35% of their goals and scored ~24% of them since he arrived.

In the playoffs, he was 12th among the Leafs forwards in ice time. You're not going to put up a lot of points in those minutes.
He's one of the fastest skaters in the league, hits, protects his teammates and is defensively responsible.
By July 1, he's going to do very well with his contract.

Stolarz can't even stay healthy to the end of the season. Untradable now.
Yeah that will make handling the goalie situation pretty trick. I think Stolarz would still be trade-able, there's always Edmonton right, but this likely really hurts his value. And I think it makes Woll less-tradeable for the Leafs since shockingly he's the less injury prone one now it feels. They may have to just go into the season with 3 goalies.

Interesting article with Rielly in The Athletic where he says he wants to stay.

He’s been bad this season. But so has pretty much anyone you pick.

I do wonder if a different coach and different utilisation of him gets something back out of him. Even if you’re retooling/rebuilding you do still need the odd “senior pro” around the place. I don’t mind Rielly at all. I’m not sure even if you trade him you get anything back that improves the team. Equally I’m not sure in a year or two if his contract is good value.

Sometimes even though sport at this level is a business, you do still have to consider the people as well. So I dunno what I do there.
