Outside of 3-4 teams in the West, their conference is so bad that St. Louis, San Jose, Winnipeg, Seattle, and LA are still in the playoff race. Nashville is in a playoff spot despite only have 2 more points than the Leafs. The Leafs are 4-5 points away from being officially eliminated from the playoffs.

The Leafs schedule is @Ducks, @Sharks, @Kings, Washington, @Islanders (road/travel/B2B), Panthers, Stars, @Senators. They only play 8 games in 18 days which is probably their lightest stretch of games all year. The Panthers game is probably going to be the only "meaningless" game they play.

Realistically New York and Chicago aren't catchable. Realistically Calgary probably isn't either, although they are injecting some younger players into the lineup.

Leafs probably need to finish 2-6-0 but might even need to finish 1-7-0
 
At each player group, there is a foundation to build on, and a new coaching group that properly leverages strengths will be a night and day difference compared to this current group of players that is clearly just going through the motions and basically demonstrating the system flaws by following their instructions to the letter and letting it fall.

Tavares can hang around with Cowan-Nylander if the Cs we land aren't top-6 level, or they swap around throughout the year/per matchup.
Tverberg, Groulx, Sim, Valis, Haymes, TJ HUGHES? should be positioned to hurdle someone

I'm hoping they give a bit of a look at the end of the season for Chadwick and Villeneuve and Thrun to see what they have, but it probably won't amount to much under Berbue/MVR.

No rush here to pare down since one of them is almost always on the shelf; one of the tandem starters can sit in the pressbox and let Hildeby ride pine for mop-ups (which should be the playoff strategy given the cap rules).

I have Rielly and Domi being jettisonned in whatever fashion. SJS has inquired after Rielly, and VAN has been shopping Elias Pettersson, and I'd be after an overpriced 2C rather than magic beans. Leafs have cap space and need to take smart reclamation project bets; showing how the operations and team structure gives sad stars a glow up will help with future UFA signings.

The bolded spot there is I think almost key to the whole organisation. As much as you hate him, someone like a Tkachuk would be incredible. Maybe there’s a Tkachuk lite out there somewhere.

I wonder if the pieces you mention, and who I agree need to be moved on in the second part quoted could be parlayed into this guy somehow.
