2025-26 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

Nothing to worry, Tre is not as dumb as we all think he is. I am confident that Robbie Thomas will not be a Leaf and that price is more related with the press going nuts without any info at all.

Remember last year's deadline ? No Clue and Bang Laughton, Carlo. (overpaied, yes, take Minten of the Carlo trade and the deal is not bad).

Anyway, I am really hoping for a Rielly trade tomorrow.

Turns out Marner and Tanev were the glue that held the team together.

Tanev is a massive loss to this team. They went into the season 2 NHL right shot D-men and lost one of them for most of the year.

The tandem of McCabe and Tanev were one of the best defensive pairings in the entire league last year. To have Tanev out there for 1/3 of the game cannot be understated.

9 years of failure, don't lose sight of that, glue that held what together? 9 years of failure.
2007-2017 was 10 years of failure. Let's not toss that word around lightly. They didn't win a championship, sure, but they haven't been a failure. They've been one of the top teams in the league since 2017.

Not even being out of the second round is a failure.

I don't know how anyone can disagree with this. What a low freaking bar.
It's a disappointment. Sure it's a failure of their actual goal of winning a cup. But having witnessed decades of incompetence, this last era was entertaining, and is sports not fundamentally about entertainment? They were a successful team, albeit in the regular season.

I think people forget, or maybe didn't live through, the downright abysmal eras this team has produced.

If we use a strict pass fail system then yes, it is a failure.

However if we were to create a failure spectrum if you will, it would be less failing than 2006 to 2017 and now the Leafs are more failing than 2017 to late year.

I'd be happy with "future considerations" if they could get out of Rielly's contract completely

"Sure it's a failure of their actual goal" Bingo, full stop. And yes I remember all to well.

I agree. But the objective fact is that they are much worse now and look to keep being much worse going forward.

Keep in mind, amid all the talk on here about jockeying for draft choices ... the very best case scenario is that somewhere down the line they draft someone as good as Marner (or Tanev, for that matter). It may happen someday, but not during the current window of "contention."
