2016-2017 NHL Thread

So, McDavid actually breaks Gartner's record. In the process, they've basically admitted that Larkin's record isn't fair. They made McDavid take off from the same position as Gartner: essentially from a stand-still just in front of the red line.

I've had trips to the bathroom that have involved more intensity than that first game at the ASG.

It takes a special kind of monster to make 3 on 3 boring, thanks NHL.

I think I have to disagree with part of his argument that NHL fans aren't interested in the Olympics and will not split viewership.

Good ol' Ron MacLean, a year's worth of lobbing softballs and then gets on his "Why do you hate Canada?" soapbox for Bettman.

Anyways, I think the extent of that split would depend on what or who the IIHF would replace NHLers with. I guess I'd be interested if it were a World Junior roster. But if it were effectively a Spengler Cup roster? I think I'd mainly ignore it.

The John Scott stuff last year, I think, distracted people from the fact that players not giving a darn about a game is more noticeable the fewer people on the ice, not less.
 
The last 3 minutes of the final game were great...the other 57 minutes were boring.  Thumbs up to Wayne Simmonds being selected the MVP.
 
Goaltenders to wear streamlined goalie pants officially starts today/ tonight.  Reducing/streamlining goaltenders' equipment has been on the agends  by the league for quite some time now.  Not everyone is too  pleased with it:

I'm liking that the Habs have been shutout in consecutive games and they're complaining they need goal scoring now.  Hopefully they go out and overpay for Duchene.  I want them to decimate their farm system, JFJ-style.  You know, cause the Habs apparently have a "Stanley Cup window" from what I hear.

Seeing Montreal's crash back to earth, it got me thinking about the Subban-Weber trade.  It's beginning to look like neither team came out ahead.  Weber got off to a hot start, but has been okay since.  Subban just can't seem to get going offensively in Nashville.  I still think Nashville ends up the long-time winner of the deal, but both were such huge factors in their respective cities previously, both on and off the ice, I wonder if the lustre of both players is not the same in their new city.

I think Weber's coming back down to earth has coincided with Price not playing god-tier level goaltending anymore.  Once routine goals start going in, people tend to notice the defensive breakdowns that led to the goal.

The Wild scored a goal in the 2nd period of their game against Chicago last night that the Blackhawks challenged because they felt it was offside. The ruling was that the review was not conclusive enough to negate the original call. See for yourself:

That has to be one of the clearest offside reviews I've seen. Especially based off the views 1:38 into the video. No idea how the refs managed to get that one wrong.
 
Pretty great story out of Washington tonight. For some context, we go back to November of last year when former Washington Capital Peter Bonda visited Abu Dhabi to run a coaching program over there. There he discovered a female hockey player named Fatima Al Ali who amazed him with some pretty impressive skills on the ice. In December Bonda followed up this visit by getting Fatima 2 tickets to Washington D.C. for a game in February so she can see a NHL game and was told she would be meeting the whole Capitals team.
