I actually agree with this to some extent. Don't play him like a #1 and line match him all the time and I think he'll be pretty good this year. It's not like there's that many other options out there.

There's a difference between competent guys and stars though. You probably won't see the Sens when they expanded into the league but I'd rather have more talent on fewer teams than less talent on more teams. At what point does expansion become unwieldly and where does it end? 40 teams? 50 teams...

That's true every year. The cap has gone up a lot in recent years and more teams want to be buyers.

I would probably rather have a better roster piece of prospect vs. the 45th pick or serviceable d-man but with the ability to draft one of Malhotra/Reid/Carels, absolutely.

That's the other thing. Why sell Matthews now when he's had two of his worst seasons? Selling low on Matthews is the absolute last thing that we should be doing. Obviously Matthews needs to be up front and open with him, but you don't move him without his say so, and he can stay put regardless...

I get that, and I think most of us were ok with some first round losses, but my greater point is just because a team isn't this years' Hurricanes (or whatever team went on to win) doesn't mean you should necessarily be ok with or expect first round exits every year and not try to be competitive.
