That's both a lot of money and a lot of years, especially if he's more of the 50-60 point player he's been most of his career as opposed to the 70 point player we saw in 17/18.

Odd that they would get this done before Pietrangelo's. Obviously there are ways to create cap space but Capfriendly has them with just about $7.7mil left for next season (based off an $81.5mil ceiling again, which probably won't be the case). They'll also have a couple of decent RFAs to re-sign.

Would you rather Pietrangelo or Barrie for the Leafs next big UFA signing next season?

I know he's from King City since his jersey is up beside ODog's in the King City arena, so I'm gonna say yes.

Ya, Pietrangelo for sure. He'll be damn expensive though.

They'll both be expensive and they'll both be kind of on the older side of the development curve and both will want term. Throw Muzzin into that pool too, but I think Sandin + Dermott sort of makes that less necessary.

If Barrie starts to light it up in the first two months here (kind of hard not to the way he and the Leafs play), do we start making overtures Jan 1 and try to keep the bird in hand before his point totals blow up further?

If all goes as we expect, the left side of the D should be set with Rielly, Sandin, Dermott (in whatever order you feel), but we're light on right D.  IF Liljegren can come through and be one option, then we still need a big presence to play right D.  Barrie fits that mold, or Pietrangelo too of course.

Pietrangelo is the sexier guy to me, but I'd like to see Barrie play this year.

Barrie doesn't PK at all, and Pietrangelo does a little bit.  Zone starts are about 50/50 for Pietrangelo, but 60/40 OZ for Barrie.

Both are PP guys.

So definitely don't need both of these RD.  Pietrangelo seems to be more of a horse, can be used in any situation, has Norris votes, perennial All-Star, team captain....

Yes, basically I expect the Leafs will splurge out on one 1st pair RD next offseason (or lock up Barrie earlier?) to have their 3 protected + 2 exempt D for next year in Rielly, Dermott, 1RD, Sandin, Liljegren.

Pietrangelo is way better statistically having played for a more defensively sound team the past 3-5 years but is turning 30 January 2020. Barrie is a year and 7 months younger and we have a longer negotiation window. 7 year deal likely in either scenario.

I'm not up on my expansion draft rules, if Sandin plays the entire year with the Leafs this season and next is he still exempt for the Seattle draft in the summer of 2021?

Yes, both he and Liljegren are exempt regardless of what happens this season because it won't be enough to accrue 2 pro seasons.

But the expansion draft isn't summer 2020 it's summer 2021 so Sandin could conceivably play 2 full years no?

Sorry, I'll clarify: 2 full seasons is still exempt.

Liljegren and Sandin are/were loans from their SHL clubs for their first AHL season(s), so those did not count as North American pro seasons (same mechanism for Nylander for the Vegas draft).

Back on topic: this is a lot of term for an aging middle player.
Stanley Cup-fever always leads to overcommitment.
