So are our players just really greedy?

.130 per point. So on the low end of this year's market but still broadly within the mainstream.

I genuinely don't see how this deal makes anyone's deal look bad other than maybe Marner(and even then I think this is broadly right there). So, no, nothing particularly greedy about the Leafs players.

Exactly what Marner's deal should have been. 9.25-9.5 over 6 years

Even if that were true, imagine injecting so much negativity into the perception of one of the brightest young players in Leafs history over 1.7-1.9% of the cap.

That's honestly a really good point.

Could be the difference between getting the pieces they need or not actually. But what do cups matter so long as Marners got a couple extra mil in his pocket

Again I ask, why can anyone be so upset at someone for negotiating a better deal for themselves? If I negotiate a worse salary for myself than my coworker, that's on me, not my coworker.

I think it's a simple answer: there is a salary cap. People are upset because "overpaying" for players can make it harder to compete. Whether said player is "overpaid" is another matter, obviously.

Anything in the world "could" be the difference but, no, the difference between what Marner got and what  Rantanen got does not reflect the difference between getting "pieces". It's barely the difference of two minimum salary players. At best it's the difference of one fairly low paid player and if Dubas can't overcome that then he isn't the right guy for the job.

It could also be the difference between an established backup goalie and tge dumpster pickups we have used for the last year. You might be the only guy I have ever heard think that overpaying salaries don't really matter in a Cap world.

Overpaying this amount only really matters if it’s overpaying a middling or intangibles-only player.

On the aggregate, we are slightly overpaying Marner and underpaying Nylander. Every ELC player that makes it through this depth chart is a severe underpay. Barrie is on a heavy discount.

It just makes things more difficult on the Leafs this season. Had Marner come in at 9.25 for instance, the Leafs would be able to accrue cap space as the season goes on instead of having to rely on LTIR and having to use less than 23 men on the roster to make the cap shenanigans work.

Sure 1.5M more doesn't sound like alot, but overpay 2-3 guys that much relative to what other GMs are doing and you've effectively boxed yourself in a corner.  Let's hope Leafs win the Cup in the next 2-4 years so we can look back and laugh at all this.
