VGK trades Haula to Hurricanes

Wow, traded for virtually nothing. While J.T. Miller, a player Haula is probably roughly comparable to, is traded for a 1st and a 3rd just days ago.

Haula's also on a much cheaper contract, but is coming back from a major injury, which I'm sure had a huge impact.

I've seen a number of media folks talk about how much of a steal this contract is. EvolvingWild had him pegged for only $1mil on a 2-year deal.

So Marleau helped the Canes on this deal

Since the leafs are competing so directly with Tampa, it really blows to see this kind of coup.

I think though that Miller is exactly the sort of guy that teams will overpay for. He's bigger than Haula and has a lot of credited hits so he fills the "physicality" thing teams are looking for.

And then he does have some legit edges over Haula. He's younger and he does have a consistent record of scoring at 50+ points while Haula just did it the once in the Vegas year where everyone on that team put up kind of wacky numbers.

I know it wasn't possible until after a Zaitsev deal, but I was really hoping the Leafs could get in on that.  Miller's numbers are very good, and he'd make a great pair with Muzzin.

Miller might not be the top pairing guy we need but it's still a little disappointing we couldn't snag him at that price.

Why isn't it possible? Leafs can go over the cap by 10% until season starts. Vegas was and still is over the cap slightly after the Miller deal.

I think it's an issue of actually being able to make the Zaitsev deal in an environment where other teams won't take advantage of the situation. If the Leafs made this trade then teams around the league would know that the Leafs had to get rid of Zaitsev and could extract a heavy price for taking on his contract just like we saw with Marleau.
