Backup battle brewing???
« on: January 06, 2019, 12:20:23 PM »
Looks like we may have found a better backup goalie then Sparks.  Imo Sparks was not very confident when in the net for us, and so far Hutch Looks like he has all kinds of it.  I am liking his style, he stands up much better in the net.  Sparks tends to drop to his knees and backs into the net way to quick and often.

Like I said in the other thread. Both goalies got Shellac'd in game 1, posted shutouts in game 2. Not sure what else you want in a backup that has gone 6-2-1 except maybe a less floppy style in net.

People were happy for a while when Bernier took over in net too because he looked calm. Man we really don't learn from history, do we?

He shut out a dead-legs mediocre team without its best scorer.  He played a good but not brilliant game and lost 4-3.  I'm all for keeping him around and by all means if Sparks collapses then at least you have someone with NHL experience to turn to.  But so far Sparks has posted good W-Ls and literally that's all you could want from a backup.

I don't think Sparks or Hutch have one a game for us because of their outstanding play. The backup job is still pretty much up for grabs.

If Garrett is back before Freddie it'll be Sparky & Hutch.

... I'm here all night.

This happens literally every time a new goalie comes in and has a good game or two. Thereís no battle. Hutch hasnít proven himself to be better in any meaningful way. Heís played all of two games. He can also be sent down without being exposed to waivers, so, from a pure asset management point of view, when youíre looking at two guys that will probably contribute roughly equally to the teamís success, you send down the one you donít have any risk of losing (Hutchinson) ahead of the one that needs to clear waivers (Sparks) - especially with the rate backup goalies have been claimed this season.

Competition is good, but it's far too soon to say anything. I imagine Sparks has a pretty long leash this year and will be given every opportunity to win the position.

The Leafs didn't trade a 5th rounder to improve their G depth just to throw away Sparks on waivers and be right back to where they were a week ago. Hutch will go back down when Andersen and Sparks are healthy. If Sparks put up a bunch of bad starts in a row, especially if the Leafs plan on resting Andersen more in the 2nd half, then maybe they'll re-consider things say sometime in February.
