In terms of swapping firsts? The way I see it is that we'd still get a high potential first and another asset.

No, what I'm asking you is whether or not that would change who the Leafs pick. Like I assume the implication here is that Edmonton wants Hanifin and you think they'd pay something and the Leafs want Strome and would be happy moving down and still taking him. It sounds like you think the Oilers could be hoodwinked, tricked into thinking that the Leafs want Hanifin when they'd be just as happy with Strome.

Because if the Leafs want Hanifin they should take Hanifin and if they want Strome, I don't think the Oilers will be fooled.

Of course this would depend on how the draft order shakes out, but I think if any off-ice games are to be played, it will be Edmonton telling the media they like Strome (when they've already decided on Hanafin) to try and bluff the Leafs into paying them something to swap picks.

So say if the Leafs end up picking 3rd. Do they go with what would amount to perhaps the 3rd best centre in the draft (Strome or Marner), or do the pick the best defenceman, Hanifin?
If they could land another top 10 pick somehow via the trade route, you might go with Hanifin and then try to land a guy like Pavel Zacha. Or do you go Don Cherry style all the way and pick hometown boys?

I'm sure this is discussed in the draft thread, but you go best player available. The Leafs need talent at every position.

I think Bozak and Kessel pretty much tanked the tank last night with that effort... little chance Edmonton catches us for 3rd pick after that shocking display of "skill" last night.  Apparently they still have some left...

Too little too late to do anything but kill the 4th over all pick they have 'worked so hard for' over the past two months.

We don't need emotion getting in the way of securing Strome at the draft. Please, someone have them hypnotized to act like drones again for the last 6 games...

There's no guarantee the Leafs take Strome regardless of where they pick and a pretty good argument can be made that finishing 4th instead of 3rd increases their chances of taking Strome.

Here is to hoping the Leafs win the lottery and draft McDavid then trade Phaneuf to Oilers for their pick and get Hanafin/Strome.  Now drink up its Sunday!!!!!

Just so we're clear on the chances of this happening....10% on winning the draft lottery and getting McDavid, 0.000001 on trading Phaneuf to Edmonton for their 1st round pick.

Carolina picked up a pity point tonight, putting them 5 points up with a game in hand. (They win ties, so it's really more like a 4 point cushion.)

Finishing 5th doesnt though. That was kind of the point. If they are suddenly feeling reinjuvinated after the Ottawa victory, it could spell the end of any hopes in getting Strome, whether he is the player they covet or not.

A good old fashioned beat down by the Lightning tomorrow night should fix that.

Maybe it doesn't. But we don't know for sure Strome is going at #4 either. Or, again, if he is there at 4 if the Leafs would take him. Maybe they like Marner. Maybe they don't like Strome.

Seems odd to get worked up about how their finish impacts their odds to take a particular player when there's no guarantee they take him anywhere.
