This may just be one of those late surges for Edmonton when the games don't matter, but they've been looked really good lately that makes me think that they may finally put things together next year and break out.

They did just get Taylor Hall back, so that's likely part of why they've looked better. I still think they have too many holes to really break out - though, they could be like the Islanders and really just be a goalie away from looking like a decent team.

We don't need them to break out... just to win 2 games, cause you know we're tanking out the rest of the season...

We also play Buffalo and Columbus down the stretch and those are not going to be guaranteed losses.  It is possible that Game 82 against Montreal could be a meaningless game for them too.   The rest of their games are certainly heavy for playoff implications.

Edmonton sits 3 points back (4 really) has Colorado and what looks like San Jose playing meaningless games down the stretch and otherwise play good Western conference teams playing for their playoff lives.

Arizona sitting 5 points (6 really) has one game against Buffalo and two against San Jose so while they are horribly bad they too have a very outside chance of grabbing a handful of points down the stretch.

It's highly unlikely that the Leafs lose out the rest of the year so I'm figuring on 64 to 66 points by season end.  That is likely too many points to move into the top 3 but will leave them comfortably in 4th.

Strome/Marner is a fantastic consolation prize.

Ah yes... but Edmonton has two things we don't; momentum and heart.  They got Taylor Hall back and are on a couple game winning streak... the Leafs meanwhile, are so bad they will only win by fluke... even against Buffalo.  I was at the game Thursday night, I generally get out to several games per year, and I have never seen such an awful effort in my life as they have this year.  They are lifeless out there... just going about the motions.  Edmonton though... they at least try, and trying can get you points ;)  Either way it will be interesting to watch down the stretch... and either way, the Leafs are going to get a fantastic prospect as we're pretty well locked into a top 5 pick regardless.

It may be highly unlikely of the Leafs to lose out, but this season has taught me that this Leafs team can defy expectations. ;)

My god:

So reading comprehension appears to be one of faults.  The question was who do you compare yourself to, not who are you already assured of being a better player than.

Ya definitely... if we win the lottery, we should pass on him.

I like the way you are thinking. If the NHL was smart they would make it happen...  ;)

What if anything might the Leafs offer to a team sitting with second pick (Eichel), along with their top pick to get him? Would say Arizona do that or you as a Leaf GM be willing to give up a lot to move up from Strome/Marner to get Eichel?

I seriously think it would be great if the Leafs could more at least one of their core players at the draft to grab one more solid prospect in the say 7-15 portion of the draft. Questions:

1. Which Leaf player do you feel would be most likely to accomplish that in a trade?
2. What team might be willing to do that?
3. Who would you like the Leafs to select if they had a pick a little above or a little below 10th pick? Choose one for each, 7-10 range and 10-15 range.

Kessel, Rielly, maybe JVR

Ouch, I wouldn't move Rielly for a 7-10 in this year's draft, not a chance. Kessel would have to bring more than that. JVR as well, though I'd be more inclined to hang on to him. I am hoping Phaneuf could accomplish this, though a package my have to be part of a package.

Lupul + Bernier... and Leafs eat half of Lupul's contract, for a 7-10 pick.
