We bought a 2007 Mazda5 about 4 months ago.  The last two weeks we've really noticed it's going through oil.

Today is the second time in 2 weeks that it's in the Mazda dealership.  It's starting to look like engine replacement.  It's not a leak, it's not going into the coolant, it the compression is fine.  They're running more tests this afternoon.   UGHHH!

I've had some frustrating ongoing problems with a Mazda (Tribute) I bought a few years back myself, starting the same year I got it (2009).
Things like Dome light issues, windshield wiper malfunctions, engine not turning on, brake pedal gyrations; pretty much a cornucopia of neverending problems.
In short; Mazda is awful. :(

From the sounds of it, you guys both bought used vehicles, who knows what the owner before you did to those vehicles, if they were maintaned well etc... Any used car can have problems, especially once the warranty is up.  That's the chance you take with buying used, one reason I only buy new vehicles.

Nope got it brand spanking new from the factory. Have had continuous problems since inception, all the way through and past warranty.

Huh, maybe just a lemon? Have they at least covered all the problem under warranty?

can't pass at highway speeds.

Really?  Last time you drove a Toyota, did you turn it on?  I have more than enough pep to pass at highway speeds in my cheap corolla.

I owned a civic Si for 10 years before my ms3, I think you would agree a Civic Si is faster and has more power than a corolla.... I would have to gear down to 4th and rev the crap out of it to pass people with any kind of gusto, in 5th gear at 120km/hr you can't just push the gas and get to a reasonable speed to pass unless you want to pass very slowly. Those vehicles typically have around 120hp @ 6000rpm or greater. My GF has a accent sport with 110hp, which I would imagine is close to a corolla's power and no, you can't pass safely or quickly at highway speeds, it takes 10 seconds to hammer the gas and get the momentum going.

My vehicle, 6 speed manual. I hit the gas and your head hits the head rest, it also gets great gas milage. I get 400 - 600km per tank of gas, depending on highway/city driving and the amount of time I spend in turbo boost (my vehicle has guages that keep track of how many litres/km and my vehicles avg is 9.6L/100km since I got it). I driven from Markham to Montreal in the past and still didn't use my whole tank.

So to have 275hp, 300ft lbs tq, good gas milage, cheap Insurance (only pay just over $100/month), lots of cargo space, good resale value and pay a little more then your basic vehicle and a lot less than STi or Evo (which are alot worse on gas and Insurance cost) and have that kind of performance, I dunno, seems like a win/win to me. I know for a fact that cars like a stang or EVO or STi, from a dig will beat my vehicle in the 1/4 mile, but on a road track or from a rolling start, the MS3 catches and passes those vehicles. I've seen it. Both the EVO and STi are 5 speeds, not 6 speed, they don't have the top end.

Again, to each their own, but personally I could never own a Toyota or Honda (again). Not enough power. And Toyota is not that cheap, by the time you get a corolla nicely equipped I bet you are in the lower to mid twenties at least, even more if you want the 's' package. I got my car for $24,900 (yes I got an awesome deal) and will run cicles around the 's', not even a challenge.

I guess it's all about context. A few years ago I owned an '88 Dodge Aries (K-car.) I passed people all the time.

Not everybody is interested in having their heads whip back into the headrest.

Just so that you guys know, this guy doesn't know shit.

And for those of you that think fuel consumption has anything to do with the size of your tank...take a science class.

Yeah. I mean, for a car that can't pass at highway speeds, my Camry gets up to 140-150 without much of an issue. Weird, right?

Yes I don't know sh--... Aren't you a toyota salesman or something....

I never said anything about the size of a gas tank. I simply stated the litres per 100km my vehicle has averaged since I got it and for the power it has it's pretty good on fuel. Thanks for the advice though.

Not everyone cares about what they drive, just get from a to b. I get it. I happen to want to enjoy my drive.

TBH, I think why there seems to be some backlash here is that to some extent you're trying to shove your view on cars on people's throats. Its not about enjoying or not enjoying the ride - I know lots of people who enjoy driving cars that aren't necessarily powerful. Point A to Point B'ers don't want to be in a misery the whole way while driving, its just what makes them happy is different from what makes you happy - low cost, reliability, gas mileage etc. Believe it or not people who have cars just to get around usually have more criteria than just "I NEED A CAR THAT MOVES."

Fair enough, I wasnt trying to come across like that. So apologies to anyone I may have offended.

A wise friend of mine was chatting with me years ago after he purchased an old Triumph and I had bought a Toyote Supra.  I was bragging about how fast and how much power my Supra had and kinda making fun of his Triumph.  He said to me "you know the rush you get flying along at 160 kms per hour"?  I answered brightly yeah.  He then offered up, well I get that rush at 60 kms per hour. And without worrying about tickets.  Made me feel a little silly and put it all in perspective.  This discussion kinda makes me feel the same way.

Yeah, and he also gets all the risks associated with that "rush" as well.

I get sucked into these car conversations....and Toyota is awesome...read up on the Scion FR-S.

Love the new Scion FR-S. Looking forward to test driving one at the Subaru dealership.

Good video here comparing it to a Mustang (of the Subaru BRZ model):
