Marlies & Prospect Talk / Re: Marlies & Growlers 2019-2020

I'm sure I'm not the first person to bring it up but I'm having a difficult time with the ECHL team's name and separating it from its slang usage.

Couldn't have gone with, like, Dogs or something?

Had to go to google to figure out what you meant, don't think I've ever heard it used that way before.

I'm not sure which of the google results you landed on but I'm referring to the use of it to mean a large, impending #2.

Ah, there appears to be... two sides to that slang then.

Indeed. In the UK it somehow became slang for a lady’s genital region. So yes, it tends to raise a smirk when the name is mentioned

Yep. I can't help but smirk every time I hear it.

I've said before I think New Jersey and Gardiner seem like such a perfect fit. Maybe they want to dump either Vatanen or Severson somewhere first. Although they do have tons of cap space at the moment so I'm not sure why they'd wait.

I do think though that Gardiner coming back here on a 1-year deal is a pipedream. Despite not signing yet I'm sure he'll eventually get a 4-5 year deal for at least $5mil somewhere. It's not the deal he originally wanted but it's still pretty good coin.

New York Rangers with Shattenkirk bought out?

Speaking of cap space, I've read that San Jose and Minnesota may want to buy out the final year of Paul Martin and Tyler Ennis respectively. Would live the Leafs to buy some draft picks or prospects by taking one of those. Or could it give us a reasonable shot at prying Dumba from Minnesota?

Whay would it take for the Leafs to trade up to pick 5-6 for one of the better defencemen available?

Shipachyov, Miller and a pick for one of our upcoming UFA's and a medium prospect?

This gets Vegas out of their Shipachyov problem and you get some gravy because he has another year after this.

I was thinking along those lines but for Theodore instead of Miller and for a couple of our wing prospects and maybe a draft pick.

But (for example) would Anaheim have exposed Manson and Vatanen without a pre-arranged deal with Vegas made before they determined who they would eventually protect?

Per CJ the Leafs are still negotiating a potential trade with the GK, Lou wasn't subject to the informal trade freeze declared last night by McPhee because of travel issues he ran into.

So we simply have to outbid ANA/NYI/MIN on their steering deals.

Surely those steering deals went through beforehand  (over the weekend or Monday) but havent been announced as per league decision and so can't be gazumped?

Anaheim leave Vatanan unprotected. Initially was a bit disappointed the Leafs couldn't have got him for prospects/picks and Carrick or Marincin (under the assumption that Anaheim could have exposed whichever of those two instead).

But after thinking about it I'm guessing the only reason they left him unprotected was that they have done a side deal with Vegas not to take him.

Ok, so how about the previous Lehtera and a 1st from St Louis for a minor prospect if that was on offer and either draft a prospect or put it into the bank towards an alternative dman?

What about a 3 way trade that is something like :

St Louis gets JVR
Leafs get Tanev, Lehtera and one of STL's 1sts
Vancouver gets the other St Louis 1st, Gunnarsson and a prospect from St Louis and a prospect from the Leafs.

Feasible or cloud cuckoo land?

Reading on TSN that St Louis *may* consider trading a first to get rid of two years left on Lehtera's contract. If so, perhaps worth the Leafs pursuing, even if it is later in round 1? That first is then either another young asset or something in the bank to put towards a d-man in a trade.

Would have preferred the Leafs to sign Boyle as a UFA in the summer. Maybe this is a step towards that.

Is there a deal to be had with Anaheim and taking one of their bad contracts plus lesser of one of their D prospects in exchange for two decent forward prospects and a pick? Fair enough if this is a bit cloud cuckoo land...

^ that's kind of why I wondered. We give up some prospects and picks for a defenceman and then look to shift Bozak, Komarov and JVR to other teams to restock.

Prospects/picks for Tyson Barrie? Anything we can realistically offer that they would take without giving up any of Marner, Matthews and Nylander?
