10 goals tonight?

1082
This...is...awesome.

1083
I'm expecting minimum two shorties on this 5 minute major.
Good call! Got one of them.

1084
Very dirty hit, good for Sill going after him.

1085
Bozak and Kessel making the big push for -30.

But if the goal is to win in 3-5 years (optimistically) then you need the JVR and Kadri's to fill out your roster and be a successful team, that calibre of player is not easily replaced by some spare part FA.

That's the thing, I highly doubt we'll be competitive in 3-5 years.  We can't put the cart before the horse.  We need to load this franchise with as much prospect talent as possible so that we truly do have a chance of becoming a contender down the road.

5 years? Maybe. 3 years? That sounds like another attempt to skip the total rebuild and rush the process. You know, kind of like Burke did...

The problem with planning to keep any of these guys around long term (Kessel, JVR, Bozak in particular) is that they've shown that when the going gets tough, they give up. If you're planning for several years of losing while building up the system, they don't sound like the kind of players to keep around because the going is going to be tough. Trade them for assets and surround the developing young core with Santorelli types.

My concern about JVR is similar to my concern about Kessel and Bozak...apparent lack of effort and results over the past 30-40 games. He's been as invisible as anyone for the most part. Not sure I want that as part of the team long term.

That said, the way things have spiraled out of control, it's tough to tell who is the primary source of the problem, and who has just been drawn into the vortex.

NHL Transactions / Re: Isles sign Boychuk - 7 years, $42 million

I was just thinking that maybe this signing makes trading Phaneuf easier? Have to admit, though, that I haven't watched the Isles enough to really be able to compare the two.

I kind of doubt that teams look at any one contract as making that much of a difference to the market.

Geez, whatever. It can't hurt, though. Are you willing to go that far?

I think Phaneuf's deal looks very good in comparison and people have labelled that pretty terrible.

Lets hope he gets it together, as he does have the potential to be a great player.
Hopefully the new coach will be able to reach him.
Even Shanaplan admitted he was off the beam at one point.
I agree but Shanahan said he was 19 when it happened with him.

Also, the impulse to dump Kadri because you're rebuilding and need to clear out some "culture" just feels a like setting yourself to be lamenting the reprise of the Alex Steen in a couple years.
Maybe...but it depends on (1) what they can get for Kadri, and (2) what is really going on behind the scenes. None of us have enough information to really assess that.

And...it's possible that Kadri would mature more quickly in a different environment (more stable/mature team, think Detroit for example) than here. If he really is unprofessional in his approach, the negative impact of that on other young players might outweigh the risk that he matures and develops once traded elsewhere. Kind of like a player with a bad contract, you may have to accept less than "fair market" to trade him and free up the cap space. Only in this case, you're not freeing up cap space but removing a possible negative influence. You might have to sacrifice on the trade return but might be better off for a team of developing young players in the long term.

I'm less concerned about "possible negative influences" than actual negative influences on the team's chances at being successful -- not having enough good hockey players. Did Lee Stepniack bring a greater maturity to Toronto? Did it matter in the least?

It's one of those things that people always want to believe is true without a lot of evidence to back it up.  Like it's just accepted and if you are a successful team that must mean everyone is a positive influence, etc.  I don't know if it's true or not, just that nobody ever seems to bring up anything concrete to back it up other than "this team is losing + this player has issues, therefore bad influence," to simplify it.
Admittedly difficult to quantify and again, we don't know the whole story. I'm not saying he's a problem, or that he should be traded. Just that it might be better for the team in the long term, especially if they go the full tear-down and rebuild route.

And...some teams might be better able to handle a "bad influence" or two. It depends on the makeup of the team, if there are strong leaders, etc.

Regarding liking the team better if "other" players were doing the losing - NO if it's just a rag-tag collection of career minor leaguers. YES if it's a bunch of young, hard working players who are developing together as a team.

I have a hard time believing the team (before the recent spate of injuries and deadline deals) was as bad as they have played since December. Yes they over-achieved early and that was unsustainable. But there was way too much talent on the team, along with some decent character players (especially Santorelli and Winnik), to accept the results and on ice effort that has been displayed over the last couple of months.

The fact that this team has essentially the same record as Buffalo over the past 30 or so games is inexcusable. Compare the rosters (before the trades)...Kessel, JVR, Lupul, Bozak, Kadri, Santorelli, Winnik, Phaneuf, Franson, Rielly, Polak...there should be no way that roster achieves the same results as Buffalo.

Figured the Leafs were going to win this one (I mean, come on...it's Buffalo), so it's nice that we at least allowed them to get a point out of it.

I do find it a little odd that they first announced one game, now have re-announced as "at least 2 more games". Sounds almost like they're asking Kadri to change something immediately and will base the exact suspension length on how he responds.

Then again, Shanahan always seemed to enjoy suspending Leaf players when he was the league's discipline czar, perhaps he just misses that.
