JVR and Bozak moved, Kadri a question mark. What do you do with Lupul?

CBA doesn't allow that.

Keep him. If the rumours of what the expansion draft will look like are true, he'll be an important guy to expose. Bozak too maybe.

Although that said, would Horton count?

I believe he would, yes - though, it's unlikely he gets picked.

And, honestly, I'm not super concerned about who to expose. The Leafs likely won't have that many players eligible for the draft still under contract after next season. They should have more than enough spots available to protect everyone who needs protecting.

Do you guys think the leafs are going to tank again next season?  Or was this a one time deal?  IMO they have a good group of young prospects right now plus they have a ton of picks in the draft (and hopefully one of those picks will be the #1 overall).

In a strict number of players sense you're right but I'd heard that there'd also be rules requiring teams exposing players that earned a certain % of the team's cap hit in the previous season.

At this point, that's still just rumour/speculation. The number of players/breakdown by position has basically been confirmed.

EDIT: There's also the distinct possibility this entire discussion is moot. Right now, I'd put the odds of there even being an expansion draft at 50/50.

Continue moving out players until the stink is completely aired out of the organization. They're close to the teardown I've dreamed of since Sundin retired.

Here's hoping that ownership continues to be hands off, they resist the siren song of Stamkos's agent, they get a bit of luck at the lottery, and we get another top 5 pick at the 2017 draft.

Why JVR?  He was much more responsible this year and is hugely talented, not to mention his size. Unless he shows he's not willing to adapt to Babcock I'd keep him. We do need some quality NHL players. I just don't think he's valuable enough to the league to get a no- brainer trade.
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.

Because realistically the team is going to have to make decisions that aren't no-brainers. They'll need to make lateral moves. Right now the team has Nylander, Marner, Dzierkals, Timashov, Kapanen, Bracco...relatively they're very strong on prospects who might end up on the wing. Where they're weak is in net and on the blueline. The real bullets in their gun, trade wise, were Kessel and Phaneuf and those guys probably didn't bring anyone back who is likely to be a major piece.

There are quite a few teams heavy in D prospects and desperate for offense. They won't offer a no-brainer, can't possibly turn it down trade but they very well might offer a trade that bolsters the Leafs in an area of need.

Team targets:

Detroit - Datsyuk is going back to Russia and will leave Detroit with a 7.5M cap hit next year.

Chicago - Have 67 million in salary confirmed and 2.9M in bonuses thanks to Adam Panarin's 70 point season and Roszival playing 50 games.  So 70 million with only 9 forwards, 2 goalies and 6 defensemen.

The biggest question mark right now with the expansion draft is that nobody really knows how NMC's will be handled. And that's HUGE. Not just for us but for the entire league. Horton has one. So we could potentially be forced to use a spot protecting him.

Why would we have to protect him?
