Auston Matthews is out for tonight's game vs. Edmonton with a minor injury. His absence is believed to be precautionary and short term.

Keefe says he's "not too concerned" about Auston Matthews. Was a possibility he'd play today, but just wasn't feeling completely right so they gave him some more time.

?s=19Keefe says Engvall, Barabanov and Brooks will slot in tonight for #Leafs.
— Kristen Shilton (@kristen_shilton) January 22, 2021
No hints on how the lines with shake out though, other than to say that William Nylander will NOT be moving to centre.
I'd rather have Nylander play centre than put one of Engvall or Spezza at 3C.
I'd rather have Nylander play centre than put one of Engvall or Spezza at 3C.
This is definitely a better time to try it than an elimination game.
Nylander - Tavares - Marner
Mikheyev - Kerfoot - Hyman
Vesey - Spezza - Simmonds
Brooks - Engvall - Barabanov
Rielly - Brodie
Muzzin - Holl
Dermott - Bogosian
(this is not the lineup card)
hahaha this sucks
I tried to do a better one but it hurt

I'd probably go:
Vesey-Tavares-Nylander
Hyman-Kerfoot-Marner
Mikheyev-Engvall-Spezza
Barabanov-Brooks-Simmonds
L1 has already been together all season and been mostly successful although now they'll be tasked with tougher match-ups. There was a planned change to have Hyman there but for now that can be postponed. If Vesey can't keep up with those you can swap him with Mikheyev but for now I'd like to keep the depth spread out a little more.
L2 is the checking line but with Marner now. I think that probably makes the most sense.
L3/L4 is whatever. I think L3 had some minutes as a trio last season, or at the very least Engvall and Spezza played together a fair bit, so there will at least be some familiarity there. But you could swap Barabanov or Simmonds for Spezza or Engvall if preferred.
I think that's a thoughtful build, albeit a waste of Marner's offense at 5v5.
Where's Denis Malgin when you need him.
I'd probably go:
Vesey-Tavares-Nylander
Hyman-Kerfoot-Marner
Mikheyev-Engvall-Spezza
Barabanov-Brooks-Simmonds

I think that's a thoughtful build, albeit a waste of Marner's offense at 5v5 (not that there has been much this season). That said, Marner is an 11M guy and now is the time to show he is as on par with Matthews as he believes he is.
PP1 is getting stacked by default now
Hyman/Simmonds
Nylander - Tavares - Marner
Rielly
What are you guys going on about? That could go neck to neck.
47 = 1C = No probvall.

Yeah, I don't think we need to try this anymore.

Ya. He's an awesome winger. Let's keep him winging.

Ya. He's an awesome winger. Let's keep him winging.
I mean I'm not saying that he should be a centre permanently, just that he's capable of moving into the position when injuries hit. Is the alternative of playing Kerfoot, who many people also think is better as a winger, at 2C really more appealing?
Let's try again
Hyman - Tavares - Nylander
Mikheyev - Kerfoot - Marner
Vesey - Brooks - Spezza
Barabanov - Engvall - Simmonds
eh...
Mikheyev - Tavares - Hyman
Vesey - Nylander - Marner
Engvall - Kerfoot - Barabanov
Brooks - Spezza - Simmonds
I don't hate this that much
Sportsnet says James Neal will likely slot in for his debut tonight. I see he had covid-19 IR protocol since Jan. 12. How long is the required time off, assuming he was negative?
I was wondering what you meant by three younger guys...Ancient!!!
Engvall is 30 days younger than Nylander
Brooks is 5 days younger than Nylander
Barabanov is 26

Can anyone tell me anything that Vesey does well? Stone hands.
Ray was right in the pregame: This is Wednesday again, except not as good.Really? There's been quite a few chances already. Unfortunately most of them have been against the Leafs.

Engvall has probably been the most noticeable Leaf this period. He?s definitely trying to show something

It's hard to look at Nylander's intensity so far this season and make an argument that it'd be a great idea for him to move to center.

New season same old
What in the hell was Andersen doing there? Great communication.
More on Rielly then anyone. Needs a sense of urgency to get back, he didn't..What in the hell was Andersen doing there? Great communication.
TSN focused on Nylander getting stripped but he never really had possession there. Andersen misplayed the puck (not a new thing for him) and then Rielly threw the puck back on Nylander feets

No one blaming Marner for coughing up the turnover on the entry leading to Rielly having to change directions?
I'm still gonna call him Jim Fecey
Not intense enough.
Oh look a penalty against the Leafs
I like what I?m seeing from Engvall.Me too, has some real talent.

Well he has a month with Joe out. Him and Barabanov have a great opportunity.I like what I?m seeing from Engvall.Me too, has some real talent.
He should be playing every night.

What do you think Humans next contract is going to look like? 5 million per year x 6? Leafs really need to keep him.I was wondering that too. In normal times I'd say something like 5 mil x 4 but with covid who knows.

Great tip but Rielly was so soft there.
I don't know how you give him that kind of space.Great tip but Rielly was so soft there.
Rielly was ducking from the shot
Nylander gets grabbed with no call
— Omar (@TicTacTOmar) January 23, 2021I have no idea what the context is but I do not care
You Bogosian really hasn?t been bad on the defense. He is clearly a 3rd pairing guy and really shouldn?t be getting more than low minute ice time but he has been pretty solid.

Yeah. Surprisingly reliable.
last season it took 46 games for john tavares to score four power play goals.

It?s nice when someone actually passes to Tavares on the PP
Andersen passes Cujo for 4th all time Leafs win list. Wow.
Either I was really young and thought Cujo won more or we are awful and finding and retaining good goaltenders.

Kerfoot had his best game as a Leaf, Rielly is too soft defensively, Brodie is changing my mind, Holl steady and sure. Where was Dermott tonight? Like the Envall line. Vesey should play with Kerfoot all the time. Souperman good.Rielly is def too soft defensively. Brodie has been excellent after the first 2 games. Holl is def a second pairing D man. Dermott made a heck of a pinch on Vesey's goal who looked better playing with Kerfoot. Souperman is turning into Mr. Shorthanded threat. Hope he can pop a goal here and there.

Another game where the Leafs absolutely crush shot attempts with Vesey on the ice, this time he went 17-4. 3rd time in 6 games he's been at or above 75%. And tonight it came playing primarily against Draisaitl. Must be doing something right.

Pretty sure a good Dermott pinch led directly to Vesey goal
A+ pinch from Dermott.

A+ pass from Nylander.

I'm not sure the complaints on Rielly are warranted. In my recollection, there was one shift where Rielly got stuck out too long and looked bad. I can't really think of any instance where he was "too soft".Rielly was too soft on McDavid's goal. Even though it was a great tip, you simply can't give him that kind of room.
Andersen was the star of that game.
Engvall looked motivated. What are the chances he stays in if Matthews comes back? Also, I kind of liked Nylander on his own with Kerfoot and Mikheyev. He was weak defensively on a couple plays, but he really embraces the "i'm the best player on the line" mentality.
I've always thought Marner and Tavares look more dangerous together.
And Willy and Matthews always had good chemistry.
I've never liked Matthews with Marner but maybe the stats say different?

Engvall, Barabanov and Brooks will be duking it out to stay when Matthews returns.
Freddie was great.

I have the same thoughts. I think Matthews and Nylander together is deadly.
