Main Leafs Hockey Talk / Re: 2024 Draft Discussion
June 12, 2024, 11:11:33 AM
Every year I read the scouting reports for round 1 and every year I wish the Leafs had 5 or 6 first round picks. Those guys who write the reports should get themselves into marketing.

Keith Pelley in rather than out (thanks for setting this up though).

Thanks guys. Hoping he makes it through training camp then.

For Cowan next season, does he have to start the season with the Leafs to be eligible for the NHL, or can he start in junior, then at a later date be called up and play up to 10 games and be eligible to be sent back to junior? This assuming that they want to sent him back rather than keep him in the NHL all season.

Essentially, a scenario I'm thinking is if they gave him a month or two in junior before calling him up - but not sure if that means he's then not eligible for the NHL if he has already played in junior next season.

Quote from: Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington on May 29, 2024, 02:38:42 PMAlso, if Stamkos gets say $6m that probably means Tavares will probably want that next summer too. Though could always just let him go.

Stamkos is coming off his 3rd straight 30+ goal, 75+ point season - basically, what he's been able to do every season he's been healthy. He hasn't shown many signs of decline yet, other than needing to move to the wing. He's going to get at least $6M, probably more, if he hits the market. Quite frankly, unless Tavares bottoms out next season, he's also likely to get a $6M+ contract offer from someone.

Yeah, I assumed if he didn't resign with Tampa that $6m to play at home might tempt him. Will be a bit of a hit in the wallet after a higher salary with no income tax.

He's almost certainly going to get an AAV of $8M+. He'll be one of the most sought after UFAs if he hits the market.

In that case it's even more of a no to fitting him in with the upgrades needed in goal and defence without trading Marner.

Quote from: Arn on May 29, 2024, 08:39:58 AMSo is there any way we can have:

Knies - Matthews - XXXX
Stamkos - Nylander - XXXX
Tavares - XXXX - Marner

In the sense that Stamkos probably isn't leaving Tampa, no.

Might be able to have that lineup by calling up Minten and Cowan if Stamkos signs for something like $6m. Under the assumption that money will also need to be spent on a decent D (Pesce at $6m?) and goalies (Broissot and Jones at $4m combined?) this would probably mean ditching Jarnkrok, Reaves and Timmins, needing to resign Liljegren and Robertson on the cheap and a bargain basement bottom pair D. Not sure that's a route we'd want to go down.

Also, if Stamkos gets say $6m that probably means Tavares will probably want that next summer too. Though could always just let him go.

Yep, was going to say I don't get the timing either. Could totally understand it on draft day as a response to what was actually happening.

I've previously suggested Marner plus extension on July 1 to Anaheim for McTavish, Gibson with £1m retained and a pick. Then Montour signed in free agency.

That would still allow cap space to potentially sign Domi, Pesce and possibly Zadorov and also potentially trade Liljegren for future trade bait.

Pity this can't and won't happen.

Get fired and then get a raise. Nice work if you can get it.

I agree that I can only see Marner headed for free agency. About the only leverage the Leafs have is being able to give him an 8 year deal in either keeping him or sign and trade, but I reckon he will go the Matthews route of shorter term and sign for 3-4 years on the open market at a rate the Leafs won't match and then a big big contract aged 30-31. So that leverage won't apply.

Wonder if this could turn ugly at games this season if/when he refuses to waive. He's already a target on social media. That's bound to transfer into the arena too at some point.

Quote from: Arn on May 17, 2024, 02:39:13 PMSo if it is Berube, can we get O'Reilly back in the Marner/Sarros trade?

In hindsight (or without it really), not being able to get ROR extended hurt the team very badly. Especially with how well he played for the Preds this season.

His style suggests he might break down quickly, so there's a risk to it. But he'd have been ideal.

Still might...

No, because we're getting Roman Josi thrown in instead.

Marner, Liljegren for O'Reilly, Saros and Josi 👍🏼

Nashville won't accept that because it doesn't include Antropov and a 2nd round pick.

Marner with extension to the Ducks on July 1 for McTavish, Gibson with $1m retained and 2nd/3rd pick or similar prospect.

Leafs get a good young centre and a goalie albeit with higher than ideal cap despite retention - but the sort of salary dump that may be needed, a potential 2C and future trade bait. Marner gets long term dough, sunshine, less media scrutiny and the chance to be a leader on a good young team so he waives the NTC.

Leafs then sign Montour to a 6 x $7m contract.

If we trade Marner with an extension for Saros then I'd defintely want Saros coming with an extension too, as well as some other pieces.
