Golden Knights vs. Leafs - Oct. 8th, 10:00pm - TSN4

I'm not going to be too upset about the shootout loss. The second period was terrible but Vegas also had the refs helping them maintain momentum with four straight calls in their favour to none for the Leafs

Matthews & Nylander were the only current Leafs forwards with a shootout goal as a Leaf
Matthews & Nylander were the only current Leafs forwards with a penalty shot goal as a Leaf
Marchenko was 61% 11-18 before Toronto
Tavares had about 25% shootout % in NY but had been 0-7 with the Leafs
Blueger was 1 for 1 before he came to Toronto
Roslovic 0-4 career
Duhaime & Sissons & Paul 0
Cowan & McKenna had 0 attempts

My two favourite things from that game:

A massive Raddysh slapshot that led to a goal. (I felt all Bryan McCabey for a moment)

That Bobrovsky glove save.

I also kind of liked the Golden Knights centre ice logo thingy. It was kinda Vegas trashy but also kinda cool.

McKenna looked more confident and assertive. He still has a ways to go. Baby steps.
In the early going, Paul seemed to be going well.

Down side:
The problems they were having in the second were a deja vu from last season. There have been some moments like that in prior games - maybe not as extended. I think they'll be able to score. Goaltending looks ok - not incredible but not a gigantic issue at this juncture. PK has been great. I worry about what went on in period two defensively. Part of the issue is they're not physically engaging to win puck battles. If they want to make the playoffs, they have to find a way to improve on that. I get there were penalty calls that affected momentum. But they have to correct it a lot faster than some of the first and all of the second period.

They really need to get back to putting their asses through sticks and hands, instead of just trying to reach and poke from straight kneed postures.

It was good to see Matthews body McNabb off a puck late in the third with just clean positioning and timing. McNabb later ran over another Leaf; he's not a smol boy.

Body slamming OEL sends him to the dressing room....and also interference
Literally threw him downwards into the ice. It's not wrestling; it was a nice hit, but tossing him downward like that isn't a hockey play. Neck and head... that was rough. I think he will miss some time.

Matthews has to start scoring. Seriously, WTF is going on with him? Can he not beat a goalie with his shot? Been waiting seasons for that shot to return. The team will not and cannot compete without him scoring.

A tip-in and a rebound goal don't indicate he's back to his old self.

I dont get now twice Mckenna not seeing the ice in OT. Stenberg with an assist to win the game for SJ in OT. These kids are talented I dont have a clue why they are sheltering Gavin. hiller is another joke of a coach. Only thing I can see is for his defensive play 3 on 3. Who cares. How many times in the past did we see Matthews and Marner cost us in OT with their long shifts, poor coverage etc. The kid has the tools to win you a game 3 on 3. Get him out there.

Apparently, if I understood Hiller's comments correctly, they had him up 3 times to put him out there in OT but I guess they lost possession of the puck and wanted someone else to get puck possession back or play defense.
